GISELA Objectives and Goals Objective1: Ensure the long- term sustainability of the e-Infrastructure in the Latin American continent Objective 2: Provide full support to the Virtual Research Communities spanning Latin America and Europe, using the e-Infrastructure. Work plan: Implement a sustainability model rooted on National Grid Initiatives (NGI), in association with CLARA, Latin American NRENs and collaborating with EGI. Provide the communities with the suited e-Infrastructure and Application-related Services required to improve the effectiveness of their research. This will address both: The current EELA-2 User Communities whose research investigations are carried out at the Institution level or in small collaborations. The larger Virtual Research Communities as Life & Earth Sciences, HEP Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile) 4 4

GISELA Work plan GISELA shall provide and support basic (CORE) operation services. It will develop inter-operation agreement with GÉANT2, CLARA, the NRENs and the NGIs, in Europe and Latin America; GISELA shall work out, with the CLARA Transition Team, the model of sustainability for the e-Infrastructure best adapted to the CLARA and LA NRENs environment; CLARA is identifying the NREN(s) that will be in charge of the Operation and Support of the e-Infrastructure, applying the business plan. GISELA basic duties: Ensure the proper access of GISELA users to the e-Infrastructure resources; Support Application developers and users over the whole process from deploying an Application up to running it in production; Organise the training best adapted to each VRC; Support the use of the e-Infrastructure and Application-related Services already developed in EELA-2 and helps the users in the validation of these services in the context of their Application; Participate in the development of new services requested by the VRCs and helps in the test and validation of these services for user’s Applications. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile)

GISELA Management Structure Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile) 6 6

GISELA Networking Activities 1/3 WP1 – ADMINISTRATIVE AND TECHNICAL MANAGEMENT WP1 has the task to coordinate, all along the course of the project, the implementation of the LGI model in close collaboration with all stake holders, JRUs or NGIs / EDGSs and NRENs. The participation of both CLARA and Grid experts in the management ensures osmosis between Grid computing and network activities. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile) 7 7

GISELA Networking Activities 2/3 WP2 - DISSEMINATION AND OUTREACH WP2 organises Dissemination events focusing on Decision Makers interaction, to get their support for the LGI / NGI implementation, and promotes outreach actions to widely spread the usefulness of e-Infrastructures for different research communities. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile) 8 8

GISELA Networking Activities 3/3 WP3 – USER COMMUNITIES SUPPORT WP3 supports VRCs by fostering collaboration among multidisciplinary groups, creates and maintains support tools to ease the utilisation of the e-Infrastructure, organises training activities tailored to each VRC needs and validates the services provided by WP4, WP5 and WP6 for future users. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile) 9 9

GISELA Services Activities 1/2 WP4 – NGI/LGI INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES WP5 – NETWORK RESOURCE PROVISION WP4 and WP5 aim at the implementation of the infrastructure and network model (See Next Slide) that fits to Latin American organisational structure. They provide support to the VRCs by maintaining and operating a production quality multi-middleware grid empowered infrastructure. WP4 deals with both Grid-support Services and Grid Operation. WP5 maintains a central role in Network-related activities Network engineering and operations support, integrated with the CLARA Operations Centre Management of the relationships between GISELA, CLARA, GÉANT and NRENs in Latin America and Europe Automation of the processes for network service provisioning for GISELA VRCs. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile) 10 10

THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND NETWORK MODEL (proposed by EELA-2 and CLARA) GISELA Services Activities 2/2 THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND NETWORK MODEL (proposed by EELA-2 and CLARA) Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile) 11 11

GISELA Joint Research Activity WP6 – INFRASTRUCTURE AND APPLICATION-ORIENTED SERVICES FOR USER COMMUNITIES The objective of WP6 is to enhance the grid experience of both users and system administrators by providing them with a portfolio of application-related and infrastructure-related Grid Services and the appropriate support to allow them to use these services adequately. The portfolio of services is mainly formed by the services developed in the context of the EELA-2 project and new services to be developed in the context of GISELA. The latter may be general-purpose services catering to the needs of many different e-Science applications, as well as customised services that target particular VRCs. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile) 12 12

GISELA Views & Wishes / e-Infrastructure ROC IGALC, already an official EGI ROC, needs that all operations services will continue to be supported. Iniciativa de Grid de America Latina – Caribe: http://www.igalc.org/ Beside the EGI ROC, the GISELA e-Infrastructure will be operated by several ROCs, (e.g.: UFRJ by ROC_IGALC, UNIANDES by ROC_LA, CCIN2P3 by ROC_France, etc.). The GISELA e-Infrastructure is built up from two (or three) distinct middlewares (gLite, OurGrid and probably OSG): special help from the GOCDB team could be needed. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile)

GISELA Views & Wishes / VRCs VRC support is one of GISELA main objectives. Some concerns: How to contact (large) VRCs? How to let VRCs know of non-European Regional e-Infrastructures as GISELA? How to coordinate actions of common interest (Training, Service development,..) between Regional e-Infrastructures? More generally, how to coordinate VRC support  in collaboration with EGI? As a matter of fact, we have already suggested the EGI related projects to also raise these issues at the "Regional Initiatives" session of this EGI Technical Forum In 2009, EELA-2 (www.eu-eela.eu) collaborated to the realisation of the e- Infrastructure Survey of the eResearch 2020 Project (www.eResearch2020.eu). Its purpose was to “investigate the utilisation of e-Infrastructures in Virtual Research Communities and to propose strategies to policy makers and the e-Infrastructure community to enhance the uptake and use of these technologies”. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile)

GISELA Views & Wishes / Network We intend to handover the operation and support of the LA e- Infrastructure beyond GISELA to CLARA and LA NRENs We are keen to continue our participation in the perfSONAR deployment. Joint CHAIN/GISELA/EPIKH Workshop - December 10, 2010 - Valparaiso (Chile)
