What is a psychopath? A person with no conscience? A violent person? Yes—by definition (“lack of remorse”) A violent person? Some are, but many are not. A killer ? Most are not, but some are…

What’s the difference between a sociopath, psychopath, and serial killer? “Sociopath” has been replaced by Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD). Pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others. Evidence of conduct disorder with onset before age 15. Antisocial behavior is not exclusively linked with schizophrenia or a manic episode.

What’s the difference… “Psychopath” continues to be used by some criminologists. Other traits of sociopaths/psychopaths Repeatedly performing criminal acts Deceitfulness Impulsivity Reckless disregard for safety of self & others Lack of remorse 15-25% of prisoners & 1% of general public are psychopaths *See handout-Psychopathy Checklist

Jeffrey Dahmer 1960-1994 Raped, murdered, and dismembered at least 17 men and boys between 1978-1991. Many involved necrophilia, cannibalism, and displaying of body parts. Diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizotypal Personality Disorder, and Necrophilia. Some think Anti-social Personality Disorder Found guilty and sentenced to 16 life imprisonments. Psychologists couldn’t agree it he was insane or not. Was he able to differentiate between right and wrong? Was he able to control his impulses? How premeditated were the murders?
