Electric Potential Energy & Capacitance

Electric Potential Energy Example 1: What is the electric potential energy of a 0.005C charge that is 4.0m away from a charge producing an electric field of 5.0x10^(-2) N/C ?

Electric Potential Example 2: What is the electric potential for a test charge in a electric field with strength 0.5 N/C that is 3.0m away from the source of the electric field? Potential = V = E * d

Electric Potential Example 3: A 12V battery is inside a Jack in the Box. If the Jack in the Box does 500 J of work, how much charge is used up?

Capacitance Electrical energy can be stored in a common device known as a capacitor. Capacitors store charge between two conducting plates separated at a small distance.

Capacitance The energy stored in a capacitor comes from the work required to charge it. The energy is in the form of the electric field between the plates Each side of the capacitor has opposite charge. Adding all the charges from both plates (net charge) should cancel out all the charges, so Q = 0

Capacitance Your cellphones have capacitors that store these charges, which produces the electric field. When your phone is connected to a charging device, the positive battery terminal pulls electrons from the plate, leaving the negative charges. The electrons go through the battery, to the other side of the plate. The charging process is complete when the potential difference between the plates is equal to the potential difference between the battery terminals
