Symbolism in Fahrenheit 451

What is symbolism? Symbolism: a representation of something through a figure or symbol. Example: Flag = freedom Dove = peace Rose = Cross =

Parlor Walls and Snake-eyed machine Both are examples of how technology rules their lives. Snake-eyed machine: removed Mildred’s blood Parlor walls: where the “family” lived and their form of entertainment.

Hearth Hearth: the floor of a fireplace. It symbolizes the absence of warmth in the home. Was there warmth in Montag and Mildred’s home?

Salamander In ancient times it was believed that these creatures could withstand flames. Who are the characters that seem to be able to withstand the flames?

Sand and the Sieve So much knowledge and Montag will never understand it all. It reminds him of his childhood memory when he tried to fill a sieve up with sand.

Mirrors No one ever reflects on what they are doing, why they do it, or what they have become. Montag thinking that Mildred is going to look in a mirror. Mirror factory

Phoenix A mythical bird that resurrects itself from ashes. Montag resurrects from ashes. He chooses to be ALIVE/AWAKE.

Fire Destruction Desire to learn and grow Montag/Clarisse wanted to learn – “spark of knowledge” Being alive vs. dead – Mildred/Beatty vs. Montag/Clarisse
