West Virginia GIS Conference Predicting 2008 Presidential Election Results in the Battleground States of Colorado, Ohio and Virginia Students are to pick a partner. Each group will receive a packet of 11 counties from one of the three battleground states. Using GIS, the group will complete the demographic information for each data sheet. After the data sheet has been completed, each group will research past presidential election results for each county using Dave Leip’s Atlas of US Presidential Elections (http://uselectionatlas.org/). Past election results will come from the following presidential elections: 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. After careful examination of the GIS and Dave Leip’s Atlas data collected, the group will determine if the county leans towards Obama or McCain. If the county leans towards Obama, give it a 1 at the top of the sheet. If the county leans towards McCain, give it a 2 at the top of the sheet. After all of the data has been collected, students will make choropleth maps of Colorado, Ohio, and Virginia. Obama counties are blue and McCain counties are red.
