I Know, I React – Safety of the Elderly ADRIAN LITWIŃSKI DEPUTY HEAD OF PREVENTION SECTION

The program is addressed to the oldest group of our community. I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY New, educational program realized by Prevention Section of Municipal Guards of Gdansk. The program is addressed to the oldest group of our community. It’s carried out with cooperation with The City of Gdansk and The University of Gdańsk.

The first pilot edition was carried out between February and May 2012. I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY The first pilot edition was carried out between February and May 2012. Recruitment for the program was led by the University of the Third Age. The program was conducted by the Municipal Guard Officer – A qualified Karate and Self-Defence Instructor.

I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY Aims of the program Raising awareness of hazards facing the elderly in the city (awareness of dangers which are in the city). Increasing knowledge about safety and law. Learning efficient methods of reacting in dangerous situations. Learning basic techniques of self-defense. Acquainting with the activities and tasks of the Municipal Guard in Gdansk as the institution responsible for ensuring the safety in the city.

The program consisted of six sessions. I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY The program consisted of six sessions. Each one lasted about 90 minutes. There were basic and practical classes of self-defense interspersed with elements of law and safety.

One course consisted of three classes, each one lasted 60 minutes. I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY In addition, a series of theoretical lectures was prepared for those participants who were not able to take part in practical self-defense classes. I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY Program Topics Introduction to legal and self-defense basics Self-defense in the law; How to act safely for yourself and the others; Practical exercises. 2. Safe at home and the surroundings. To draw attention to risks occurring in the neighbourhood of place of my residence; Discussion of risks at home - „a stranger at my door.„  

I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY 3. Safety on the way to the shop, home, church, during the walk. Overview of risks occurring in daily situations and presentation of how to avoid them. 4. Travel safety. Presentation of risks in public transport vehicles (train, bus, tram); Presentation of risks in public transport areas (railway stations, bus stations, bus stops, platforms, undergorunds etc.) and how to avoid them;  5. Safety in the city. Determination of potentially dangerous places in the city and situations likely to happen there (urban parks, tunnels, gate houses, etc.);  6. Improvement of techniques of self-defense.

I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY The summary of the course was a lecture on: „Practical aspects of self-defense and rules of conduct in dangerous situations in relation to the current law.”

I KNOW, I REACT – SAFETY OF THE ELDERLY The last lecture was held on 19 May 2012 at the Faculty of Law, University of Gdansk. At the end of the program participants received a certificate of participation. The next series of the program will be launched in autumn 2012.
