NatSIP is a unique national partnership of professionals and voluntary organisations working with children and young people with sensory impairment (SI) and their families a partnership of people working together to improve outcomes for children and young people with sensory impairment through promoting collaborative working the strategic delivery partner for DfE, now negotiating an extended contract to March 2018 which will include supporting the sensory impairment workforce, in their response to the Government agenda, to reach the ‘front line’ in education for CYP with SI from 0-25yrs

Contract 206 -2017 to provide delivery support to early years providers, schools and post-16 providers to improve outcomes for children and young people with sensory impairment Some key points: We are over two thirds of the way through the year NatSIP partners are involved in an intense period of activity as we work towards meeting the objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs) of the contract The quarter 3 report to DfE records successful progress across the workstreams, with any slippage accounted for and in recovery We are in the fortunate and privileged position to be negotiating a contract variation for 2017 – 18 which allows for further development of some of the emerging findings from this year’s work 22 of 25 NatSIP events have taken place this year, reaching over 650 attendees

Contract 206 -2017 to provide delivery support to early years providers, schools and post-16 providers to improve outcomes for children and young people with sensory impairment Some web portal (the NatSIP website: www.natsip.org.uk ) stats: Website active users: The number of active users of the web portal was 1,178 at the end of Q3, against a trajectory target of 1,268, and a year-end target of 1,350 Website downloads: Web portal downloads in the year to 31 December 2016 were 16,873 Website visitors: There were 14,252 visits to the web portal during the Q3 (15,081 in Q2). The average visit duration was 10min 37 secs (unchanged). The average user looked at 3.6 (was 3.7) pieces of content on his/her visit, with some 49,881 page views being generated in total.

Requirement 1 (good practice) of the NatSIP contract: To promote good practice on supporting children and young people with sensory impairments Develop a national online interactive resource – the Sensory Learning Hub Hold national working days to validate new training materials Compile a ‘what works’ database Offer a national programme of face-to-face training and support Establish national Quality Standards training Deliver OnLine Training for frontline staff Publish ‘Just Enough Support’ – guidance for FE with young people Collect and monitor outcomes benchmarking data

Requirement 2 (high quality teaching - specialist): To equip the school workforce to deliver high quality teaching and SEN support for pupils with sensory impairments Develop a CPD portfolio for Sensory Impairment Train QTSIs as tutors for OnLine Training courses Develop resources for specialist teachers and lecturers – as a consultant, partner and trainer Offer specific training in areas: MSI regional courses (RCE) MSI mainstream courses Deaf apprenticeships CYP with VI and complex needs HI CYP and complex needs Specialist staff and curriculum changes

Requirement 2 (high quality teaching - specialist): To equip the school workforce to deliver high quality teaching and SEN support for pupils with sensory impairments 5. Research the needs of the sector for the future 6. Explore the specialist links with Requirement 1 (good practice) Develop NatSIP Learning Hub Quality Standards 7. Promote the SI sector nationally – through wider NatSIP activity

Requirement 3 (EHC Assessments and Plans): To improve the quality of specialist advice for education, health and care (EHC) assessments for children and young people with sensory impairment Publish guidance on Outcome Based Assessments Develop and online training resource / checklist Give practical examples of EHC Plans Promote resources Regional workshops for professionals Regional workshops for parents Increase the reach of the portal Training resources Information gathering forms (x9)

Requirement 4 (Technology): Promote the use of technology to improve the accessibility of education and outcomes for children and young people with sensory impairment Establish a national technology advisory group for SI Develop easy access resources Deliver regional training days Develop a tool to support the evaluation of new technologies LENA Use of tablets for VI CYP Develop a ‘what works’ database of technology interventions Update guidance and training on the Equality Act (2010) duty

Wider NatSIP Relationship with DfE and NHS England Innovation projects Commissioners A NatSIP presence at conferences and events – raising awareness for SI within SEND, and with other DfE contract holders, promoting successful partnership working Service and peer reviews HoSS email forum

NatSIP 2017 – 2018? Signed contract, to be in place from 20th March 2017, will possibly include: Further work developing the SI sector for the future More support to mainstream providers and frontline 16 to 25 years Regional commissioning for LISEND It will certainly include positive working with NatSIP partners striving to improve outcomes for CYP with SI.
