Counter the drift Fill the gap Work for competence NGO´s perspective

The good old times: All the functions including nature conservation come in the wake of close to nature forestry

Reduce risk by reducing tree age Mechanization to reduce labour costs Segregative elements necessary Detritus chain (deadwood) not sufficient

The Federal Government of Germany worked out two strategies The Biodiversity Strategy 2020 states the aim that by 2020 5% of the forests should be left to develop naturally (that is 10% of the state owned forests) and nature conservation contracts for 10% of the private forests should be established The Forest Strategy 2020 states that the aims of the National Biodiversity Strategy should be pursued in private forests by voluntary agreements with the owners and financially compensated. The measures should be financed in the framework of the common agriculture politics (2.Säule der gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik) financed jointly by the Federal Government of Germany, the federal states of Germany and the European Union.

wilderness real nature backed by big NGOs and the city population Second-rate forests good for wood and maybe some forest functions

This misinformation doesn`t only hurt. It is destructive (Nature without protection The ancient beechwood forests of the Steigerwald are threatened)

Public attention and funding for large-scale reservations Forest owners scared off by regulatory policy

The fate of the forester? wilderness real nature backed by big NGOs and the city population Second-rate forests good for wood and maybe some forest functions

Dr. Jekyll the conservationist Mr. Hyde the lumberjack

What about the communal forests? What about those 50% private forests? FAUN - Initiative for Integrated Forest Nature Conservation Manifesto and website, where it can be signed plus further information www.faun-iwi.de

Who we are: Foresters, scientists and conservationists What we want: Perception and implementation of nature conservation as an integrative part of forest management Technical and financial promotion of nature conservation in all of Germany´s forests Harvest of forest products in responsibility for coming generations

What we demand of forestry: Close to nature forestry including enough elements such as habitat trees, wetlands etc. to ensure diversity of forest species. A network of forest reservations and forest stands protected by nature conservation contracts and connected by habitat stepping stones and corridors. „Decentralized wilderness“ The maintenance of biodiversity associated with traditional forms of forest management (i.e. coppice ) Scientific monitoring and backup of integrated forest management and forest reserves.

for the overall promotion of integrative forest management, What we demand of Politics: Enough staff, competence, authority and finances for the forest administration for the overall promotion of integrative forest management, for the necessary financial support and the technical advice in all kinds of forest property and the discussion and communication of the measures with the public

In Germany this implies: Per federal state at least as much staff as is usually granted for national parcs (100-200) to set up, implement and evaluate regional concepts for nature protection in forests 10 € per hectare of private and communal forests earmarked for nature conservation contracts (instead of about 1€ in Bavaria at the moment) Which means to pursue the aims of the Federal Biodiversity Strategy and the Federal Forest Strategy 2020 with a motivated empowered forestry administration granting advice and attractive, reliable subsidies Instead operating with peanuts and bureaucratic obstacles

Our Activities Information on the website www.faun –iwi.de (and further collection of signatures) Letters to Members of Parliament Networking Press releases Workshop (!) for foresters supported by the Technical University of Munich and EFI Further hopes: Contribution to the establishment of a trust Achievements...
