Science Classroom Procedures Welcome to Mr. Piper’s Science Classroom

Welcome Welcome to Mr. Piper’s classroom. I am here to teach; you are here to learn. I will do my job; you will do yours, and we will together use this year wisely and beneficially. Positive attitude is the key to success. Let’s keep it all the time.

What Are the Rules In This Classroom? Lets talk about classroom rules and procedures.

Why Do We Have Procedures? A procedure is the way we do things. To do things right, we have to follow some simple procedures, for example: To place a call on your phone, you need to dial the correct number. So, to be successful in learning you need to follow some simple procedures.

Entrance Make sure you have all necessary materials for the class. 1 of 2 Entrance Make sure you have all necessary materials for the class. Enter the classroom quietly. Pick up materials for the day and drop off any home learning that is due. Go directly to your seat. Get ready for your work. Have pen or sharpened pencils, books, and materials ready.

When you finish, wait quietly for the next direction. You may also use this time to briefly speak with me or make an appointment to make-up a test or get extra help.

Bellwork Everyday will begin with bellwork. You will find the bellwork on the front screen. Bellwork should be started before the bell rings. Bellwork is required and is to be correctly labeled and kept in your Science Notebook. When you finish, wait quietly for the next direction.

Picking Up Materials for the Day Any handouts that you need on a given day will be found in the tray marked “Please Take One.” If the tray or sign isn’t there, you don’t need to pick up anything, just begin the day’s bellwork.

Handing in Home Learning If there is an assignment that you need to hand in, place it in the tray marked “Please Deposit Home Learning Here.” If the tray or sign isn’t there, keep the assignment and begin the day’s bellwork.

When You Are Tardy Enter the classroom quietly. Excused: Place excuse slip in the basket on my desk. Unexcused: Sign detention list on the clipboard by the doorway. Go to your assigned seat and get ready for your work. You will not be excused from any work you missed. Get the assignment from a classmate and do it at home.

1 of 2 During Instruction Ask questions related to the subject. Other questions which are not related to the subject can be asked after instruction. After instruction make sure you understand the concept. If not, ask questions by mentioning which part you didn’t understand.

1 of 2 While You Are Working Make sure you read or listen to the directions about your work and understand them. If you didn’t understand, ask help form other students sitting around you. If they also don’t understand, ask the teacher to explain it. If you are asked to help, be polite and kind and do your best.

2 of 2 While You Are Working Talking to each other should be no louder than a whisper. The person sitting on the other side of the room should not be interrupted by your noise. Respect each other and be friendly. Use your time wisely. Put forth your best effort to finish your work on time.

1 of 2 Keeping Your Notebook You should have a Science Notebook which will be used for only your Science class. (A standard size three-ring notebook is recommended.) Use pen or pencil to write in your Science Notebook. All notes and assignments should note the following in the upper right corner: your full name, course name, and date.

Print your name and the name of the course clearly on the front of your notebook. Your notebook will be collected and checked form time to time. Turn it in on time when you are asked. Take good care of your Science Notebook. Do not lose it.

If the Teacher Raises His Hand Stop whatever you are doing at that moment. Face the teacher and wait silently. Notify any classmates who haven’t noticed that the teacher has raised his hand. No talking or whispering. All of your attention should be given to the teacher.

After You Are Done With An Assignment Check your work and the directions one more time to see if you missed anything or did something incorrectly. If the assignment is to be turned in, do so. Start your reading session. (Read your textbook or associated course reading material.)

Proper Assignment Headings Record your name, name of course, and date on all your work assignments (i.e. tests, quizzes, projects, outlines, notes, home learning, etc.). All work assignments should be headed like this: Your Name Course Name Date Assignment Title

Home Learning Procedure Home learning helps you learn and improve on the lessons we are learning in our class. Complete and turn your home learning in on time. Failure to turn in home learning assignments on time will result in a 10% reduction and a ZAP.

1 of 2 When You Are Absent Get the assignments from your classmates and the worksheet from Mr. Piper. Do the work at home. If you missed a test or quiz because of your excused absence, inform Mr. Piper and arrange a time to make up the test after school. You will not be able to make up any work if you have an unexcused absence. You will get a “0” for those assignments.

2 of 2 When You Are Absent It is up to the student to inquire about missed work and tests. The student has as many days as he or she was absent to make up assignments. Zeros will be given if a student fails to make up work within an acceptable time frame. That means a ZAP.

What do I do next? If you finish classwork early: Work on unfinished Science assignments. Read your textbook. Review vocabulary words. Start working on Science home learning. Review and make sure your Science Notebook is in order.

Scheduled Checkout Approved early checkout from class: Please let me know as soon as you enter the classroom. Quietly raise your hand to get my attention. Pack your materials and leave at the scheduled time. If it is an emergency, quickly get my attention and I will assist you.

Late Papers & Projects It is school policy that students failing to turn assignments in on time receive a ZAP during which the assignment is to be completed. Papers and projects turned in late may also be subject to a penalty of 10% for each day late. Remember, home learning assignments may not be turned in late for full credit.

Classroom Discussions Please participate. I want to hear what you have to say. Make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion. If your question is off the topic, write it down and ask it later.

Moving Around the Room You must ask permission. Do not ask during a classroom discussion unless it is an emergency.

Using the Restroom The restroom may only be used in emergencies. A pass is needed for leaving the classroom. Do not ask to use the restroom or to go to your locker before class begins; just go before you get to class. Anyone late for any reason is late.

Class Dismissal Wait for me to dismiss you. The ring of the bell does not dismiss you, I do. Do not start packing up prior to the bell. “People who pack fast shall leave last.” Wait until I finish and officially dismiss you with: “Have a nice day!”

Projects One of the most exciting activities in your Science class will be your special projects and special labs. You are required to do a Science project each semester. Due dates will be announced later this year.

Classroom Rules School-wide classroom rules are posted on the wall; Always act and speak in a respectful and appropriate way. Bring all necessary materials to class. No gum, food, or drink allowed. No exceptions. No electronics, such as cell phones or i-pods, etc., are allowed.
