Presentation transcript:

November 30th Warm-up Week of 28 to 2 (textbook page 63) Write the whole question What is an compound? And what is an example of an compound? Key: 5 4 3 1 2

Classifying Matter: Elements, Compounds, and Molecules

Elements Elements are substances made of a single type of atom Represented by a symbol. Upper case letter or an Upper and lower case put together Example: C (Carbon) or Ca (Calcium)

Elements – Let’s try…. Examples of elements are: ________

H2O NaCl CO2 Compounds Represented by chemical formulas Compounds are made from two or more different elements joined chemically Represented by chemical formulas H20 (Water) – 2 hydrogen and 1 Oxygen CO2 (carbon dioxide) – 1 Carbon and 2 Oxygen C6H12O6 (glucose) – 6 Carbon, 12 Hydrogen, and 6 Oxygen. Can only be separated by chemical means, not physically NaCl CO2

Organic Compounds Any chemical compound whose molecule contains carbon Carbon is usually accompanied by one or more of the (CHONPS)* elements. Other elements (CHONPS)* C: Carbon H: Hydrogen O: Oxygen N: Nitrogen P: Phosphorus S: Sulfur

Your turn….. What is the difference between an element and a compound? The difference between an element and a compound is ____________________ ______________________________.

Your turn….. Which of the following compounds are organic? H20 (Water) – 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen NaCl (Salt) – 1 sodium and 1 chlorine C6H12O6 (glucose) – 6 carbon, 12 hydrogen, and 6 oxygen.

Molecule Two or more atoms bonded together Can be the same element or different elements Examples: H2O H2 NaCl O2

Your turn…. What is the difference between a compound and a molecule? The difference between a compound and a molecule is _______________ ______________________________.

Can you identify the following? You will be shown a series of photos. Tell if each photo represents an item composed of an element, compound, or molecule. Review: An element contains just one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together. A molecule contains two or more atoms combined chemically that can be the same or different elements
