BluTech lenses are the gold standard in blue light protection BluTech lenses are the gold standard in blue light protection. Very simply put we are blue light protection perfected.

ABOUT BLUTECH Trusted since 2010, before blue light was “in”. Fight against blue light is personal. Committed to preservation of healthy vision. BluTech was developing solutions to the problem of blue light long before the rest of the industry. We are the trusted name for blue light protection since 2010, long before blue light protection became the next big sales opportunity, Blue light protection is all we do! Why? It’s personal. Three of four grandparents of the company’s founder lost their vision to age-related macular degeneration. We are sincere when we say that we are committed to the lifelong preservation of healthy vision.

SOURCES OF BLUE LIGHT What brings us to this discussion. The sun has and will always be our most significant source of blue light. Who here plays, works, drives outside without sunglass protection? Nowadays, given your knowledge of UV and glare, you wouldn’t think of it. Yet, with our digital devices, LED and CFL light bulbs and more, we have brought the blue light hazard of the “sun” indoors. Unless we choose to wear our sunglasses indoors we are currently defenseless against these blue light hazards.

Would any of us choose to give up your digital lifestyle Would any of us choose to give up your digital lifestyle? I personally will not. So, our indoor life now revolves around computers and digital devices and the blue light threat it poses.

BLUE LIGHT’S TRIPLE THREAT 3 1 Blue light poses a triple threat. The above slide illustrates the critical wavelengths for each Blue Light impact area. 2

BLUE LIGHT’S TRIPLE THREAT: 1 BLUE LIGHT’S TRIPLE THREAT: Daily vision – glare, eyestrain The light from 400 to 420 is the highest energy along the blue light spectrum and is the greatest source of glare and eyestrain. That’s because there is nothing in the eye to absorb blue light. 400-420 nm

BLUE LIGHT’S TRIPLE THREAT: 2 BLUE LIGHT’S TRIPLE THREAT: Long term vision – macular cellular damage Macular Damage: 400 to 440. The entire Blue light spectrum may contribute to that long term rusting of the back of the back of the eye, otherwise known as macular damage… but it’s concentrated in the bottom area of the spectrum. 400-440 nm

BLUE LIGHT’S TRIPLE THREAT: 3 BLUE LIGHT’S TRIPLE THREAT: Overall health: disruption of sleep/wake cycle Critical Sleep/Health Range: 459 to 484- When exposed to these wavelengths at night, according to Harvard Medical, blue light can suppress upwards to 53% of your melatonin. Spoiler alert: melatonin is what tells your body to go to sleep and stay asleep. 459-484 nm

WHO IS AT RISK? There are four patient groups for whom it would be medically correct for you to provide BluTech lenses: All children under the age of 18. They are especially at risk, which I will talk about in a minute. Post cataract patients as their Ocular lens pigment has been removed along with their cataract. Ocular Lens pigment provides a natural protection against blue light. However it does not begin to develop until the age of 40. Post Lasik patients suffer from flares and halos around lights. BluTech lenses significantly reduce glare proving improved vision especially at night time 3. Anyone at high risk for AMD or current AMD sufferers. They benefit from the glare reduction properties of BluTech lenses. 4. And anyone who uses a digital device more than 3 hours a day

30% Nearly 1/3 of adults (30%) spend more than half their waking hours (9+) using a digital device. 72.5% But it’s not only the “medically correct patients” that are candidates… it’s all adults. Consider these compelling facts about adults and blue light… 72.5% of adults are unaware of the potential dangers of blue light to eyes.

Symptoms Commonly Associated with Overexposure to Digital Devices: Eye strain, 32.8% Neck/shoulder/back pain, 32.6% Headache, 24% Blurred vision, 23.3% Dry eyes, 22.8% 31.9% And here’s the symptoms that adults complain most about… do any sound familiar? Who has experienced these kinds of symptoms? Of adults do not take any action to reduce symptoms of digital eye strain

CHILDREN ESPECIALLY AT-RISK No natural protection Hold devices closer Larger pupils Blink rate cut in half if contacts Children are especially at-risk of being adversely affected by blue light. Why? Children have short arms, very large pupils, and clear crystalline lenses in their eyes. Physiologically they need to keep these screens close to their eyes in order to see the screens clearly. I want you to keep this in mind as we continue this discussion.

CHILDREN ESPECIALLY AT-RISK Average daily media use Teens (13+) Tweens (8-12) - Common Sense Media, 11/2/15 9 hours a day As of November 2015 the average daily media use was 9 hours a day for teens and 6 hours a day for 8 – 12 year olds. 6 hours a day

THE PROTECTION DISCONNECT THREAT PEAKS @ 460 nm iPad 2 THE PROTECTION DISCONNECT Is your Blue Light solution protecting patients where they need it most? The optical industry has responded with a variety of solutions… Blue light AR Coatings and clear monomers are the most common. The reality is that they are not protecting you from the very wavelengths emitted by popular devices. PROTECTION PEAKS @ 420nm Competitive coatings, monomers

Incandescent Light Fluorescent Tube White LED INDOOR LIGHTING HAZARDS The good old incandescent was gentle on the eyes because the spectral curve matched the natural light of a setting sun. NOTE the gradual curve. Spectral curves with spikes make it hard to focus and create visual “noise”. Also note that both FL and LED lights spike around 460, precisely the wavelength that isdetrimental to sleep.

Exercise your duty to inform Due to the hazards that blue light poses to adults and children alike, you have a duty to inform patients about their level of risk based on their digital lifestyle. By the End of This Presentation, you are going to be left with one decision. Are you going to help reduce digital eye strain and actually help protect your patients from the wavelengths actually emitted by devices (450 to 460 nm)? Or are you going to prescribe a solution that gives patients a false sense of security?

TRIPLE PROTECTION When exposed to blue light, Blue Light Plus™ filters light in all three areas of impact. It acts like sunscreen that a.) has a higher SPF; and 2.) it has been applied evenly to all exposed skin. This is compared to the other solutions which offer less protection and only in the lower range. 1 3 2

Unique formulation of pigments and lens materials Complete near-clear protection against blue light Infused in lens, won’t wear off BluTech Lenses provide triple protection against Visual strain; potential long term damage and for many wearers assists in reducing their sleep/wake cycle disruption. This is accomplished through: Unique formulation of pigments and lens materials Complete near-clear protection against blue light Infused in lens, won’t wear off

BPF™=Blue Light Protection Factor Positioning BluTech BPF™=Blue Light Protection Factor A measure of how well a BluTech lens will protect your eyes from blue light. The higher the factor, the higher the protection. Here’s how all the BluTech solutions stack up. From left to right, you receive progressively more blue light filtration. We use a term BPF which refers to the level of protection you can expect from each lens.

Typical Polarized Lenses Positioning Outdoor Great for outdoor activities and reading digital devices and LCD displays outside. BPF™=Blue Light Protection Factor A measure of how well a BluTech lens will protect your eyes from blue light. The higher the factor, the higher the protection. Dr. Janice Jurkus says, “Polarized sunglasses* are great at reducing glare, but they can make it difficult to see the LCD on your cell phone or navigation system. It's harder to see an ATM screen when you've got polarized sunglasses on too.” Again, we want to make sure that the patient has solutions in both indoor and outdoor lenses. The unique feature of BluTech polarized lenses is the ability to read digital devices outdoors. *http://www.rd.com/health/conditions/13-secrets-your-eye-doctor-wont-tell-you/ OPPORTUNITY: UPGRADE YOUR EVERYDAY POLARIZED SUNGLASS TO BluTech Outdoor Lenses. This will give your patients everything they love about traditional polarized glasses and eliminate the 1 thing (Not being able to read digital devices, gas pumps, greens outdoors). > Typical Polarized Lenses BluTech Polarized
