Chemical Safety Awareness Course Jonathan Gulley DGS/SEE

“Toxics” These substances can poison even at small doses, can pose a serious health risk, in the short or long term, and even result in death. Examples: cyanides, methanol, asbestos, wood dust, mercury, lead, hydrofluoric acid…. Carcinogen (asbestos, beryllium and certain of its compounds, tobacco smoke, wood dust, chromic acid, chromium VI...) Mutagen (chromic acid, bromine, benzene…) Toxic to Reproduction (lead and certain of its compounds, carbon monoxide, mercury…) Orange labels are old labels are gradually being replaced by the diamond shape. By 2015 all new chemicals will come with the diamond label. “chess” hazard sign represents may hazards like toxic and CMR or specific organ “nocif” – harmfull

Health Hazards Sensitizing agents: cause a substantial proportion of exposed people to develop an allergic reaction in normal tissue after repeated exposure. Sensitizing in case of skin contact, or respiratory sensitizers (asthma): Examples: some glues, some epoxy resins, some fluxes used in welding/soldering… Sensitizing: skin contact, or respiratory sensitizers (asthma) They are sensitive to these exposures A solution can be working in a glove box Corrosive substances: in contact with living tissue, can have a destructive effect. Examples: acids (nitric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, hydrofluoric) bases (sodium hydroxide), some glue hardeners..

Reactive chemicals Oxidizing agents - substances which can provoke or aggravate a fire, or even provoke an explosion, if in the presence of flammable materials. Examples: halogens, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, nitric acid.. Substances which can explode in contact with a flame, a spark, static electricity, heat, shock… Before were the health hazards. Now we talk about the physical hazards Explosif is only for solid material Flammable: Many more: like alkaline metals Flammable substances (solids, liquids, gases..) Examples: flammables gases (methane, isobutane, hydrogen); flammable liquids (ethanol, acetone); certain metals in the form of dust, sodium, potassium...

Others… Dangerous for the environment Pressurized gas Examples: Solvents, glues, paints, hardeners, biocides/pesticides.. Pressurized gas

Where to find information? GHS labels (new pictograms) 1st place to look is the label on the container H225 is the “hazard statement” P102 is the “precaution statement”

Where to find information? Labels CERN Stores SCEM : 19.19.35 In the CERN stores we have pre labeled bottles put we can buy it separate Ad-hoc labels done at CERN for specific applications SCEM : 50.55.20

Where to find information? Safety data sheet (SDS or MSDS) Chemical Product and Company Identification Hazards Identification Composition, Information on Ingredients First Aid Measures Fire Fighting Measures Accidental Release Measures Handling and Storage Exposure Controls, Personal Protection Physical and Chemical Properties Stability and Reactivity Toxicological Information Ecological Information Disposal Considerations Transport Information Regulatory Information Additional Information SDS is the primary source of information – produced by the supply and the MUST provide this with the chemical Always 16 chapters regulated by the REACH directive Highlight chapter 2 and 7
