Then and now Read TWICE in silence, thinking about: How many stanzas do you see in ‘Then and Now’? What is the focus/purpose of each stanza? Stanza: a division of a poem consisting of a series of lines arranged together in a usually recurring pattern of meter and rhyme.

THEN AND NOW Imagine someone is reading this poem to you. How would it sound? Cheerful? Sorrowful? Remorseful? Monotonous? Concerned, dismal and fast paced to reflect the sudden changes in society. Reflects the title, ‘Now and Then’. Nostalgic and melancholy.

What is the context of this poem? Then and now: context What is the context of this poem? What is the poem about? What is the poet talking about this?

Which environment is this poem set in? Then and now: setting Which environment is this poem set in? Place Time

Then and now: characterisation 1st person / 2nd person / 3rd person? Who/What is the character? Character ≠ person always.

Then and now: Views and values What’s the message of this poem? The audience’s emotions towards this poem? How about Kath Walker’s emotions?

Then and now: context Refers to the desire she has for the Aboriginal lifestyle to be like it was before white colonisation. Shows the impact of the 'Assimilation Policy' on the Aborigine's way of life, forcing them to change their culture and live apart from their traditional ways.

Then and now: setting Australian landscape and Indigenous people’s deep connection to the land. It also reflects the effect the policy had on the environment and nature, as it no longer had the aboriginal community to nurture it.

Then and now: characterisation Discussion around objects that represent groups of people - settlers and indigenous people. 1st person perspective influences the way in which we read the poem and creates tone and pace.
