How this PowerPoint Works Some of the slides in this presentation are hidden. (The slide number has a box and slash through it.) A hidden slide will not be shown in ‘slide show’ mode. It is visible and can be edited etc. in ‘normal’ mode. You can change modes on the view tab or with the icons in the lower right corner. Some of the slides have notes. These notes contain more detailed information that will be helpful in understanding the background of an artist or talking points for a slide. If you would like view or print this presentation with the notes, use the ‘notes page’ on the view tab or on the print menu.

Lesson Overview 1 Lesson: butterfly prints Time:75 minutes Volunteers: 4 Medium: foam prints Curriculum connection: butterflies Project Overview/Skills Students will make a print by making an impression in the foam sheets.

Materials Needed Half sheet of scratch foam per student Scratch paper cut in half sheet size Large Brayers x2 Block printing ink, 2 color Acrylic sheets for inking x2 Construction paper for printing, cut in half Q-tips or Brand new pencils- erasers used to make dots on paper Q-tips for getting ink out of grooves in foam Acrylic paint (until it is used up) for dots Large sheets of construction paper to put under paper when inking up

Display Once the project is finished, student work should be mounted on colored paper and displayed either in the classroom or in the designated area in the hallway. If there are some who have not finished, please check with the teacher on how they would like to proceed. Do not assume that it ok to continue the project after the allotted time.

Today’s Project Butterfly prints

Step 1 – Parts of a butterfly What are the parts of a butterfly? What kind of symmetry does it have?

Step 2 – Draw a butterfly body Draw a long, thin oval for the abdomen Add a shorter, thin oval for the thorax Look at the wings- what simple shapes can we use to draw them? Triangle Petal

Step 3 – Butterfly details Draw wing membranes What shapes are they? What other details can you add? Antennae Swallowtail shape to hind wing

Step 4 – Transfer design to foam Put your drawing on top of the foam Make sure that it fits! Go over your design with your pencil hard enough to make an impression on the foam (but not cut through it)

Step 5 – Inking Squirt ink onto acrylic Use the brayer to even it out by rolling up and down The ink is ready when it no longer slides on the ink and when it makes a “sticky” sound Ink the foam evenly from edge to edge

Step 6 - Printing Pick up the foam and carefully set it down on the printing paper Rub it gently with the baren (wooden spoons) Peel it up foam and you have a print!

Step 7 - Dots Sign your finished print Rinse off your foam- you can take it home too You may add decorative dots around the edge of your print with the q-tips
