Common Soft Tissue Wounds Scrapes Cuts/Incisions Bruises Puncture Avulsion

Controlling Bleeding- Using Pressure

Scrapes 1. Wash your hands before giving first aid. 2. Wash the cut thoroughly with mild soap and water. 3. If available, apply antibiotic ointment. 4. Apply a clean bandage.

Cuts 1. Wash your hands with soap before giving first aid. 2. Wash the wound thoroughly with mild soap and water. 3. Use direct pressure to control bleeding. 4. Bandage the wound with a butterfly bandage. 5. Get medical help.

Bruises Bleeding into the skin, subcutaneous tissues, or mucous membranes. Blood collects under the tissue; a hematoma is a large collection that forms a lump.

Puncture Sharp object pokes into skin High risk of infection Don’t remove an embedded object

Avulsion Skin is either partially or fully torn away Usually jagged edges
