GRADUATE EDUCATION LEGACY Graduate education is fundamental to the mission of Jackson State University. The Board of Trustees of the (Mississippi) Institutions of Higher Learning authorized Graduate Education at JSU in 1953. Instruction was limited to educational administration and supervision for which initial Master of Science in Education degrees were awarded in 1957. IHL approved the Graduate School in 1972 and the Division of Graduate Studies in 2003.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION The University is nationally recognized for following best practices in graduation education and quality leadership for graduate faculty, staff and students in support of educating academic scholars. The Carnegie Commission granted: Doctoral Research Intensive designation in 2000 and Doctoral Research High Research Activity designation in 2005.

MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS Graduate enrollment has increased every year Fall 2011 (2059) to Fall 2015 (2327) The University was selected for the Top 100 Graduate and Professional Degree Producers. 86 doctoral degrees were conferred in 2015-2016 ay. 7th in conferring doctoral degrees in education 9th in conferring doctoral degrees in “all disciplines combined” 21st in conferring doctoral degrees in psychology National Research Council ranked the University among the Top 20 institutions in conferring doctoral degrees to African American scholars. Graduate Program Reviews are conducted and results are used for program improvements

WHERE ARE WE GOING? The Division of Graduate Studies will provide exemplary leadership by working with the Graduate Community of Scholars in developing policies and procedures for enhancing quality standards of excellence in graduate education for the recruitment, retention, and graduation of students.

WHAT WILL WE DO? Advocate the Carnegie doctoral designation and maintain a clearly recognized voice in the decision-making process relating to graduate education Continue a national reputation of offering quality programs and a clear position among peer graduate schools Assist in attracting adequate faculty with impeccable credentials, high quality students, and provide professional development activities.
