Presentation transcript:

M & M Atoms Students will create a Bohr Model of an Atoms using circle maps, M&M’s, and Atoms. Follow the directions below to complete the activity. Students will be working in groups of 4. Each group will receive a laminated circle map, Expo Markers, iPad, and 3 bags of M&Ms. (2 bags of peanut of one color and 1 bag of plain) Student will watch short videos using the app Atoms, found in the iPad. They will follow the instructions giving in the app. Students should take notes on separate sheet of paper. Students will now create a Bohr Model using circle map and M&Ms. Students will be instructed to complete the model how the deem fit. (They can draw orbits, label, make key and write names on map) Once students have completed their Bohr Model, they will need to take a picture of their Bohr Model. We will use these pictures later in the week for presentations using the Apple TV. Now students will begin to pick up their area and put all materials in proper locations. Groups that are completed will now use their textbook or iPad to determine what element they created. There is no prior knowledge on this. They just spend some time with Periodic Table and try to figure this out. Early finishers can use the Bohr Model app to play games and build more Bohr models. When every group is done, we will begin to present using the Apple TV and group pictures. This task uses: Circle Map Peanuts and Plain M&M iPad Apple TV (suggested) Common Core/NG Standard(s): (PS-M-A2) Describe the structure of atoms and the electrical charge of protons, neutrons and electrons. TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/email: Misti Labbie/ misti.labbie@cpsb.org School: Frasch Elementary Grade Level/Subject: 5th/ Science Task Card Level: 5th grade Special Directions/Considerations: The Atoms App by Kids Discovery is $3.99. Atoms HD was free. Teachers should note that Peanut M&Ms should be used as protons and neutrons, and plain M&Ms should be used as electrons. Activity Evaluation: Screen Shot of Atoms HD, M&M Circle Map Prerequisites for students:
