To us, there is no ambiguity of purpose. We do not have the fantasy of competing with the economically advanced nations …. But we are convinced that if we are to play a meaningful role nationally, and in the comity of nations,, we must be second to none in the applications of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society. ISRO’s Initiative in Development Communication Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) (1975-76) Was the test bed for satellite based education and training. Largest Sociological Experiment covering 2500 villages. Programmes for school children, school teachers and rural audience on Agriculture, Health, Hygiene, Nutrition etc. 40,000 teachers were trained during SITE. Substantial knowledge gain in Health and Hygiene. Ministry of Education and NCERT were active partners. Triggered off many initiatives in Distance Education leading to establishment of CIET-SIET, CEC, AVRC, EMRC & IGNOU.
