Trench Warfare For four years, the war dragged on, the front line moving very little. Only with the invention of the tank did the strategy of “positional warfare” BEGIN TO FAIL.

The United States Remains Neutral For the majority of the war, the United States claimed neutrality, selling goods to both sides. The majority of American exports, however, went to the British and the French, eventually prompting the Germans to target American shipping vessels crossing the Atlantic. It is estimated that by 1918 the US had loaned Allied powers more than 2,500 million dollars while loaning the central powers 27 million dollars.

The US in the War With the US entry into the war, the Germans made one last ditch effort to end the war before the arrival of US forces. This effort failed, with France taking the majority of the hit, and the Germans folded knowing that the million plus troops on their way from America would be too much for them to handle.

The End of the War Germany surrendered  and agreed to sign a cease-fire agreement, or armistice, known as the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty punished the Germans by stripping them of territory, dismantling their military, and forcing them to repay the costs of the war.
