JORN UTZON

Background Information Born on April 9, 1918 in Copenhagen, Denmark Died on November 29, 2008 in Helsingor, Denmark He was a Danish Architect best known for designing the Sydney Opera House in Australia Other works include the Bagsvaerd Church in Copenhagen and the National Assembly Building (Kingo Houses) in Kuwait Jorn Utzon (2007).

The Sydney Opera House The Opera House opened in 1973 This was after the development which began with Utzon’s competition-winning design in 1957 Utzon left the project in 1966 due to conflicts with the Minister of Public Works Now there’s a dedicated room located in the Opera House called the “Utzon Room” which overlooks the Sydney Harbour Sydney Opera House (1973).

Bagsvaerd Church His most notable work in Denmark and located north of Copenhagen It was designed in 1968 and was completed in 1976 Its considered to be the masterpiece of contemporary church architecture He came up with the design when laying on a beach in Hawaii Bagsvaerd Church (1976).

Kingo Houses Construction started in 1956 and was completed in 1958 Housing development in Helsingor, Denmark The development was based on additive approach, he started with one unit and proceeded from there Utzon described the arrangement of house as “flowers on the branch of a cherry tree, each turning towards the sun” Kingo Houses (1959).
