Presentation transcript:

Twitter Caitlin Myers Digital Literacy Specialist Welcome to Facebook basics! Name Today we will be explaining terminology you’ve most likely been hearing. Afterward, we are going to begin making our own Facebook accounts. Please let me know if you have any questions along the way. Why does someone want to be my friend? What is Facebook?

What is Twitter? Twitter is a social networking website that allows you to read and write 140 character passages or tweets. Movie: The Social Network

Why Twitter? Follow celebrities, authors, local businesses, musicians, friends and family. Potentially chat or connect with your favorite celebrity, author, or musician. Get breaking news before it hits your television screen. Stay up to date with those meddling kids!  - How you use Facebook. What do YOU do? Some Features Explained What is a news feed? News Feed (the center column of your home page) is a constantly updating list of stories from people and Pages that you follow on Facebook. News feed stories include status updates, photos, videos, links, app activity and likes.   What’s the difference between a profile pic and a cover pic? Your profile pic is the picture that friends see next to your name everywhere on Facebook. This is how people recognize you. Your cover photo is the large image at the top of your timeline. This is your chance to feature a unique image that represents who you are or what you care about. Facebook Timeline v Facebook Pages Timelines are for individual, non-commercial use. Pages look similar to personal timelines, but they offer unique tools for connecting people to a topic you care about, like a business, brand, organization or celebrity. You can like a Page to see updates in News Feed about brands you care about.

#hashtag A word or phrase used as classification of a topic, preceded by the pound sign. Metadata tag Example: Went to Sweet Mandy B’s and got cupcakes. #cravings #CheatDay

@SkokieLibrary Definition directly from Twitter.com: The @ sign is used to call out usernames in Tweets: "Hello @twitter!" People will use your @username to mention you in Tweets, send you a message or link to your profile. A username is how you're identified on Twitter, and is always preceded immediately by the @ symbol. For instance, Katy Perry is @katyperry. https://support.twitter.com/articles/166337

Example of @ Hey, @jk_rowling! We’re learning #twitter today at Skokie Library. #AlwaysLearning #HermoineGranger @genesimmons We're learning Twitter @SkokieLibrary on a beautiful Friday night. #PartyLikeARockstar

Twitter.com Why is Facebook privacy important? If you choose to share things publicly on Facebook, anyone with an account will be able to find and view your Facebook information, posts, and activity. This could impact your privacy in a variety of ways. For example: You could be sharing personal information you’d rather keep private, such as your birth date and address. Anything you post, such as photos, comments, and status updates, will be visible to people you don’t know. Embarrassing or unflattering posts could negatively affect your personal and professional reputation. Third-party websites and applications can access and share information from your Facebook account.   Best Practices Review your account and privacy settings every few months to make sure they are meeting your needs. Under account settings sign up for login notifications. Use a unique password for Facebook Don’t list your home address or indicate when you are going on vacation! Don’t post compromising pictures or information that you may regret. Security and privacy settings only apply to your page. When you post on someone else’s page this may visible to people you don’t know. Post accordingly. Don’t assume others have as strong security settings as you do. Don’t click on suspicious links and use the “Help” button to report abuse. Twitter.com
