Expanding the Framework: A Discussion of the Impact of and New Directions for the Principal Pipeline Initiative

An AACTE-Wallace Foundation Communications Initiative Introduction: Rod Lucero, AACTE Vice President for Member Engagement and Support Moderator: Tricia Turner McManus – Executive Director, Leadership Development, Hillsborough County Schools, Florida Doug Anthony – Executive Director Office of Talent Development, Prince George’s County Public Schools Nancy Gutierrez – Vice-President, District Leadership Support, New York City Leadership Academy, New York Mikel Royal –Director of Leadership Pathways, Denver Public Schools, Colorado Closing: Angela M. Sewall, Emerita Dean and Professor

Discussion predicated on multiple years of Engagement with the Principal Pipeline Initiative and Two Years of Work with the Principal Supervisor Initiative What changes have you made in practice and policy to improve principal preparation and professional development, as a result of your work with Wallace? How does your district measure the impact of these changes relative to teacher performance and student achievement? If you could add or delete one dimension of your model to create more positive impact, what would that be and why? You meet regularly with other grantees as part of this Initiative. What have you learned from each other?

Furthering the Discussion How have you planned for sustainability as personnel changes and when the grant support is no longer forthcoming?  How are you sharing the knowledge and practice ideas that you have gained from the grant activities within your state and with other partners, both in higher education and in school districts? What continuous improvement mechanisms do you have in place and how do you ensure that others, for example your Department of Education, understand the work?

What suggestions would you have for districts and states that have similar challenges but have not been partners in this work, as they endeavor to bring about positive change in principal preparation and district leadership without the fiscal support and guidance provided by the grant?

The additional Impact of the New Grant Relative to Principal Supervisors and Supervision How has the new Wallace grant in regard to principal supervision and the addition of more districts and higher education institutions impacted your work? Have you augmented your model as a result?

Evaluation and Change What processes of evaluation do you employ? How do you work closely with the state and with IHE’s relative to these processes? How have your personnel and programmatic evaluation processes changed as a result of the PPI? Has there been an impact in the IHEs relative to accreditation? If so, what?

Final Thoughts The partnership (PPI) has focused on large, diverse urban districts. What advice would you give to HIED faculty and to leaders in small districts in rural states with similar SES and diversity challenges and who may have difficulty identifying and providing professional development to staff while working with instructional improvement?

Finally, A reminder that a concurrent session on the new standards and the Wallace Principal Pipeline and Principal Supervisor grants is scheduled at the AACTE Annual Meeting on February 23, 2016, 9:15-10:15 a.m.
