Revision of Metals and non-metals

Keywords of T2T1 Ductile: Malleable: When something is able to bend, without breaking for example a piece of wire (when it can be hammered). Hammered: When you hit something with a hammer or heavy, flat object. (for example aluminium foil) Ductile: When something can be drawn into thin wires after it has been heated, for example copper wires.

Can you think of an example of a mould? Alloy: A metal that consists of two or more metals. Ore: Rocks that contain metal. Can you think of an example of a mould? Gold ore Mould: Hollow container into which you pour a hot liquid to cool and set.

Soot: Black powder that forms when coal does not burn properly. Dull: When something is not shiny. Brittle: Something that is hard but can easily break into small pieces.

Properties of non-metals: Everything on earth is made up of metals and non-metals. There are more metals than non-metals on earth. Only ten non-metals are solids at normal room temperature. The solid non-metals are: Dull (not shiny like metals) Brittle (They are hard but can easily break into small pieces) They are: Shiny Hard Strong Malleable Ductile Able to conduct electricity. They melt at high temperatures.

Other properties of metals: In the previous discussion we said that metals are shiny, hard, strong, malleable, ductile and has high melting points. Metals also have other properties that makes them even more useful. These properties include being able to conduct heat and being magnetic. Lets try this! Metal are also useful because except for IRON, they don't rust!! Rust… No rust…

Experiment time!! Lets see witch metals will rust when we leave them in water!

Where do we use metals? Different metals are used to make different things. This is because some metals: Are shinier that others Are softer or harder than others Melt at higher temperatures that others Conduct heat better that others Are magnetic and others are not Resist corrosion better that others Some metals are most useful when its pure. Pure metals Alloys Some metals must be mixed to make them more useful.

Where do we use metals? Here is some examples: Pure metals and alloy metals are used to make a wide range of products. Wire, metals can be drawn into wires and is strong. Coins, metals are long-lasting, hard, strong and can be poured into moulds. Jewellery, because meals are shiny. Furniture, building, bridges, motor cars and roofs. Kitchen utensils, because metals are shiny, hard and strong.
