What is IB? IB focuses on the development of the whole person as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. Students in the 21st century are faced with the challenge of learning about an interconnected world where knowledge is constantly developing, the IB program prepares students to be active participants in a life long journey. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an international educational programme that offers four high quality programmes to more than one million students in 148 countries. Franklin Academy Cooper City campus offers the MYP (Middle Years Programme) to all students in grades 6-8. Founded in 1968, IB currently works with over 3,863 schools in 148 countries, working with over 1,215,000 students ages 3 to 19 years. IB works with roughly 1,370 public and private schools here in the United States. “The goal is of the IB program is to help students develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world.” At all levels, IB takes a global approach and focuses on the students as a whole both in the classroom and outside.

Middle Years Programme (MYP) The MYP is designed for students ages 11 to 16. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. IB is not the curriculum, but the approaches to the curriculum. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement - essential qualities needed to create a peaceful world.

IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Franklin Academy’s Mission Statement The mission of Franklin Academy is to create life-long learners by developing critical thinking skills and promoting high levels of academic achievement in students, while meeting the benchmarks of a standards- based curriculum utilizing varied research-based instructional strategies, technologies, and media, with an emphasis on character development.

How does the IB affect FACC? Rigorous academic and personal standards, challenging students to excel not only in their studies but in their personal growth. IB will help prepare students for living and working in a complex, highly interconnected world. The development of life learners through inquiring as well as creating knowledgeable and caring young people to create a more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Students will be on the path to be prepared for the rigors of college and career. IB grades in addition to those found in PowerSchool ALL IN approach, from the Board, to the Principal, to teachers, and including all staff (cafeteria, custodial, etc.) Professional Development for staff geared towards IB. Teachers have been, and will continue to be sent all over the United States to participate in specific training in their subject group areas.

What’s new for students? Franklin Academy will prepare a community of learners to engage with global challenges through inquiry, action and reflection. Learning expectations are different. Learning will look like… Working in teams, collaboration Inquiring and exploration Analyzing and conceptualizing ideas from all over the world Reflection Learning how to learn Critical and innovative thinking, solving real world and global issues Different and multiple perspectives, understanding those with different perspectives aren't wrong Risk-taking Community service

What is different about the MYP? Student schedules are different. The IB requires students to have a minimum of 50 hours of teaching per subject group. All students in the MYP Programme must take a foreign language. IB grades on report cards (1-7) Traditional classes such ELA, math, science, electives, P.E., and history, are all considered core classes, and are referred to differently.

IB Framework IB is a curriculum framework. The MYP framework allows schools to meet specific state requirements and standards, while maintaining the IB mission.

The IB Learner Profile IB learners strive to be: Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective The learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
