Handling the Microscope  Carry the microscope with two hands – one under base and the other on the arm  Place the microscope on the table with the arm facing towards you Place the microscope at least 10 cm from the edge of the table Always wipe the lenses with lens paper before and after use

Focusing the Microscope  Look into eyepiece with both eyes open  Always focus first with the low power objective using the coarse adjustment  Use the fine adjustment to make the image clearer and sharper  Never use the coarse adjustment knob while using high power  Be careful that the objective lenses do not touch the glass slide  Never search for the specimen under high power

Storage of the Microscope  Store microscope with low power objective in place, with stage racked all the way down, cord wrapped up, and with the cover on the microscope

Determining Total Magnification Magnification = the ability to make an image appear larger compared to its actual size The formula for determining total magnification is: Total magnification = ocular magnification x objective magnification

Determining Total Magnification The formula for determining total magnification is: Total magnification = ocular magnification x objective magnification Type of Lens Magnification Ocular 10x Low power Med power High power

Determining Total Magnification The formula for determining total magnification is: Total magnification = ocular magnification x objective magnification Type of Lens Magnification Ocular 10x Low power 4x Med power High power

Determining Total Magnification The formula for determining total magnification is: Total magnification = ocular magnification x objective magnification Type of Lens Magnification Ocular 10x Low power 4x Med power High power

Determining Total Magnification The formula for determining total magnification is: Total magnification = ocular magnification x objective magnification Type of Lens Magnification Ocular 10x Low power 4x Med power High power 40x What is the total magnification using the 4x objective lens? 10x x 4x = 40x What is the total magnification using the 10x objective lens? 10x x 10x = 100x What is the total magnification using the 40x objective lens? 10x x 40x = 400x
