My learning outcomes are… To DESCRIBE the structure of a light microscope To EXPLAIN how to use a light microscope to observe cells I will show success by… Label a diagram of a light microscope Describe the functions of the features of a light microscope Write a set of instructions to describe how to use a light microscope.

Create an instruction for a leaflet for microscope I must include … A labelled diagram of a microscope. Simple Step-by-Step instructions on how to use a microscope. A description of the history of the microscope. An explanation of the things that microscopes have allowed us to do in science. A description on how we can calculate the Magnification power of a microscope. An interesting fact about microscopes. DUE – 4th November

Write down two things that are viewed using a microscope. http://scaleofuniverse.com/ Write down two things that are viewed using a microscope. FACT: Microscopes have been used for over 300 years. From 1670’s Anton Van Leeuwenhoek used a single lens microscope to look at small creatures, leaves, human blood, hair and skin. http://scaleofuniverse.com/

Features of microscopes Watch the following video and make a mind map in your exercise book on the features of microscopes and their functions. Features of microscopes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKA8_mif6-E Watch Carefully You will be tested.

label the microscope on your work sheet. Using your mind map, label the microscope on your work sheet. EXTENSION TASK – include the function of each labelled part. 5 minutes

Look at the prepared slides and draw what you see on your work sheet. In pairs – Look at the prepared slides and draw what you see on your work sheet. Write a set of simple instructions on how to use a light microscope properly 10 mins

A light microscope magnifies the object on the slide using two sets of lenses: the eyepiece lens at the top of the microscope the objective lens next, to where the microscope slide is placed. Typical values for the magnifying power of an eyepiece are: ×5, ×10 and ×15. Typical values for the magnifying power of an objective are: ×4, ×10 and ×40.

Microscopes are used to see things that are too small to be seen by eye. A light microscope has two magnifying lenses: Objective lens – near the object being looked at. Eyepiece lens – near the eye. The eyepiece lens magnifies the image formed by the objective lens. The magnifying power of the microscope can therefore be found by multiplying the magnifying powers of the two lenses. Magnification = Magnification of X Magnification of of Microscope eyepiece lens objective lens After marking the answers give your class mate some feed back and targets WWW – What Went Well EBI – Even Better if

Please Help! Label the microscope on the board. Anton Van Leeuwenhoek has travelled to the future in a time machine and he needs your help in showing him how to use our microscopes. Please Help! Label the microscope on the board. using the post-it notes. Make sure you explain what each part does. Can you include any interesting facts or instructions on how to use a microscope?
