Design elements and principles
Line Element of length: organize, direct, separate, suggest an emotion or create rhythm
shape The external outline of a form
texture The look and feel of a surface: pattern, design Adds richness and dimension
space Space between objects, often known as white space
Size/scale The size of objects in relation to one another Indicates importance, focus
value The lightness or darkness of an object or area on the website Shows depth When used w/ color can indicate mood, emotion
Design principles
balance Arranging elements on a page to provide a sense of equity – or to purposefully unbalance them to create emphasis
proximity The relationship between elements on the page
alignment Brings order and organization, includes how you align text and elements on the page
repetition Repetition, consistency and unity all ensure your website has a consistent, easy to read flow Includes text, color, how objects are displayed, etc.
contrast Use of different sizes, shapes and colors. Indicates importance, helps items stand out
