Invasive Species

Questions of the day: What are some other names for invasive species? How do these species get to/from other places? What are some key characteristics of these species?

Invasive Species Ranked 2nd to habitat loss as major threat to biodiversity Invasive species accelerate the rate of environmental change Species adapt to environmental change on a geologic time scale- evolution (slow change) Species can not adapt rapidly to these environmental changes created by invasive species

How do they get here? Global trade Removal of geographic barriers Canals Dams- creating new habitat in lakes Transatlantic vessels Ballast water

Ships- through ballast water

Ballast water-read the material from the link below and answer the questions on your lab sheet. http://www.nwf.org/what-we-do/protect-wildlife/invasive-species/ballast-water.aspx

Lab Activity Read together Background information Lab observations of 4 invasive species Complete info, draw a sketch and answer this question: Why are they so successful? Re-group- to look at all 10 species Answer and discuss Questions and Activities

Overall summary: Characteristics of Invasive Species High reproduction rate Tolerant of poor habitat quality Facultative habitat requirements Pollution tolerant Facultative forage requirements Often found in disturbed habitats Aggressive
