Helicopter B1 and B2 Technician Continuation Training Roy Ratdal Director of Maintenance Projects

What impact does « New Technology» have on the operating crew ? Have we changed the way we do our training, in accordance to «New Technology?

Training Requirements

1970-1980-1990,s Analog Systems Relativly Few changes What you See and Do is what To expect. Training Aid:

What impact does « New Technology» have on the operating crew ? Avionic Management System -System operation and Indications controlled by software AMS update ,How is this administrated/trained before intoduction to the fleet. Training – Individuel AC status information to operating crew Complexity of pre –post modifications/Make sure the right software computers get installed. Automation of system operation Require much more detailed system description operation knowledge. Revisions of Maintenance procedures The changes in systems - modifications (ASB,s) and Maintenance Manuals procedures are mutch more frequent.

What impact does « New Technology» have on the operating crew ? Troubleshooting Usage of on board maintenance computer information for correct troubleshooting Old or young generation of Technicans Understanding /interpretation of the proposed maintenance action. Basic knowledge OEM information (web etc.) Goes to Part-M organisation, how is this information transfered to the Part 145 organisation. Training of Instructors Instructors need frequent updating.

Have we changed the way we perform the training in accordance to «New Technology ? Most of the B1-B2 training on «new technology» are still utilizing old technology tools New Technology Tool

The use of Desk Top System(DTS) Instructor station console The DTS is installed in a classroom, where the instructor have screens for instruction/presentation. The DTS is a software tool which can replicate the cockpit layout, and at the same time the various helicopter technical systems. Both presentations is visible on “live” screens. Students have individual computers with dual screens. Instructor software and the student software may work independent or collectively. 2 ea projector screens Student station

The use of Graphical Flight Simulator (GFS) The GFS replicates the cockpit by interactive screens. That means that instead of physical handles, switches and controls, the student touches icons on the screens to make input to the simulators. Instruments and indications will replicate responses like the real helicopter. The GFS does not have visual view as the Full Flight Simulator. However, in the window view, the student will on a screen, get live view of the schematic system functions that is relevant to his cockpit input. Examples: When starting the engines, the student can monitor exactly what happens with fuel valves, fuel flow, ignition system etc. When turning on switches for the hydraulic systems, the student will see live illustration of hydraulic flow and valve operation If the student get an engine fire indication and reacts to that by operating the fire extinguisher switch, he will at the same time as he can see cockpit indications, also monitor system function flow “live” The instructor may introduce all type of operational and technical failures and malfunctions. The student will easily be able to understand the failure modes and how to correct.

Norwegian Oil and Gas Requirements 5.2.1 Competence There shall be established a program of initial training and maintenance training for all technical personnel who perform maintenance. This is to ensure optimal knowledge of technical systems (for all equipment including HUMS, ADS-B, deicing equipment, etc.) and quality systems / procedures. There shall be a minimum of two days of classroom instruction per helicopter type per year. Training for B1 and B2 engineers should also include annual use of the simulator (same as for pilots, but two hours, or a more suitable and customized technical system simulator). The aim should be to ensure better understanding of systems related to all equipment helicopters on the Norwegian continental shelf is equipped with. The training will be based on a documented training program

Course Content The concept is a unique training module every year. It is based on customer’s previous year: Operational and technical issues (reliability data), OEM inputs Procedure changes ASB,s modifications. The following is used in training courses: Unique document for each module. Desktop Simulator (DTS) Graphical Flight Simulator (GFS) DTS/GFS for interactive review of technical systems and system failures

HUMAN FACTOR Training Utilize Human Factors experianced Field data in the training.

Does modern Training Tool works? – …check students feedback…

My Vision «A Global Helicopter guideline for flights to petrolium Installation» Define all training requirements, and how they should be executed. We Do Not compete on safety, we work togheter as an industry to assure safety. OEM-Operator,s share technical/operational issues, make a annual training module tailored to last years experiance/modifications on each helicopter type to ensure maintainers get the same training whereever the operation are in the world .

Thank you for the Attention
