Types of Admissions AVID 3/4

Imagine this scenario… Your friends have all been accepted to college and/ or are planning to go to Chat Tech. They are discussing dorms, course schedules, and orientation while you HAVE NOT EVEN APPLIED ANYWHERE YET! While they are getting ready for college and are studying for exams, you are frantically trying to get your SAT scores back and ask any teacher who has time to complete letters of recommendation for you. I know what you are thinking… that won’t be me! Really? Just last year it took until APRIL to have 100% of AVID seniors apply to college. You guys can do better…

Early Decision This is for students who know that if a college accepts them, they will enroll in that school. Usually, early decision is legally binding. Many schools don’t offer this option, but elite and Ivy Leagues do, such as Penn State, NYU, Harvard, etc. Usually NOT the right choice for most students

Early Action This is for students who have a college in mind and believe they are a good fit for the school. Students can be accepted, given a conditional acceptance, rejected, or deferred

Regular Admission Due dates vary by school from December to May. This is the appropriate choice for MOST students

Rolling Admission Many schools, such as KSU, have a rolling admission process, meaning that they will accepted students throughout the school year. This is a good option for many students; however, if you wait until April to apply somewhere, you will be overwhelmed and frustrated.

Open Admission Open Admission generally means that the admission process is unselective and non-competitive; the only criteria for admission is that the student have a high school diploma or GED certificate.  Most colleges with Open Admission are community colleges or colleges which grant Associate degrees.  There are a few, but not many, four year colleges with this type of admission policy.

On the Graphic Organizer The first box is where you put your own definition of the type of admission The second box is where you list and describe the pros for that type of admission The third box is where you list and describe the cons for that type of admission
