Why It’s a Great Day to be a Mustang … Three Things … Why It’s a Great Day to be a Mustang … College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready! Campus Goals – (1) Literacy (2) Rigor (3) Leadership

Distinction # 1 T-STEM Designated Campus – Designated by the Texas Education Agency, these Academies serve as demonstration schools and learning labs, which develop innovative methods to improve science and math instruction. The cornerstone of T-STEM Academy learning is student engagement and exposure to innovation and design in STEM-focused instruction and learning that models real-world contexts. T-STEM Academies serve as demonstration sites to inform math and science teaching and learning statewide. The T-STEM initiative aims to closely align high school curriculum with admission requirements of competitive colleges and the STEM qualifications for 21st century jobs. The goals of T-STEM campuses are to: (1) increase the number of students entering postsecondary studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; (2) facilitate the promotion of quality school leadership that supports school redesign efforts, quality teacher recruitment and improved teacher preparation; (3) and assist in the long-term educational and economic development, and alignment of these fields. Designated in 2014, Coronado is one of just over 120 campuses in Texas with this designation by the Texas Education Agency. College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready! Campus Goals – (1) Literacy (2) Rigor (3) Leadership

Distinction # 2 AP Capstone – An innovative diploma program that allows students to develop the skills that matter most for their future college success: research, collaboration, and communication. The program includes a two-course sequence: AP® Seminar and AP Research. Developed in direct response to feedback from higher education faculty and college admission officers, AP Capstone complements the in-depth, subject-specific rigor of Advanced Placement® courses and exams. Students who complete AP Seminar and AP Research with scores of 3 or higher, and receive scores of 3 or higher on four AP Exams in subjects of their choosing, will receive the AP Capstone Diploma™. Designated in 2016, Coronado High School joins just over 600 schools in the world with an approved AP Capstone diploma program. This map shows the location of the approved AP Capstone campuses in the United States. College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready! Campus Goals – (1) Literacy (2) Rigor (3) Leadership

Distinction # 3 AVID – Develops learning, study and academic behavioral skills that are essential to success in rigorous coursework. It acts as a catalyst for schools to develop a culture of college readiness for all students across the campus. In the AVID Elective class, students receive daily instruction and support to prepare them for college from a trained AVID Elective teacher. AVID impacts students schoolwide as academic strategies like writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organizational skills, and critical reading (WICOR) are taught in all classes by teachers who have been trained to use AVID strategies in their specific content areas. Coronado High School is in the process of applying for the distinction of becoming a National Demonstration School for AVID during the 2016-2017 school year. Currently, only 12 high schools in Texas hold this designation. College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready! Campus Goals – (1) Literacy (2) Rigor (3) Leadership
