Geometry What is it? Properties of Figures Algebra Reasoning Logic Plane Solid Algebra Used throughout Reasoning Logic Formal Proof Constructions Note: Some students find geometry a bit intimidating at first because it tends to be less ‘cookie cutter’ or recipe based in the solution methods than previous math courses.

Curriculum Presentation Hybrid of Traditional Lessons, Investigative Activities, “Flipped Lessons” Prepare students for the AZ College and Career Readiness Exams. Requires more writing and explanation than parents may remember from math class. Many concepts are taught within a context and then reinforced as necessary by traditional means.

What is a Flipped Lesson? Students preview “straight-forward” or introductory material in advance of the lesson in a structured format. Notes or other assigned task (flashcards, thinking maps) completed based upon a video link or reading assignment. A quiz may be submitted online to guide class discussion the next day. The tasks and quizzes may be graded for completion. Only Specially Chosen Lessons will be flipped!

Why “Flip” a Lesson? Students Adjust Pace to Fit their Needs: Maximizes Use of Class Time: Teachers and students can focus on more complex topics and have more time in class for questions. The online quizzes allow the teacher to tailor discussion to student needs. Students Adjust Pace to Fit their Needs: Struggling students may rewind and watch a lesson or pause it as needed to improve mastery. Teachers may slow or speed up the lesson based on quiz results.

How Can I Help My Student? Ensure Assignment Completion Flipped Lesson Tasks Traditional Assignments Online Access for flipped lessons and assignments. Encourage Student to Participate Fully in Class Investigations and Discussions. Ask questions as needed. Encourage Student to Take Advantage of Office Hours Success and Club Time Passes After-School Office Hours (to be posted on my site)

We have textbooks (sort of) Texts for use in class. (1/2 class set) Each Student will get Full Electronic Access to the text. Full Print version Extra Practice WSs Interactive Lessons (similar to the printed text) Video Lessons Adaptive Tutoring Application

Geometry Assignments Students will need to download (print) their textbook HW. This should be done in advance in case of connectivity issues. Supplemental assignments will be handed out in class. Worksheets Warm-Ups NOT BUSY WORK: Previews for Upcoming Lessons, and/or review of standards not mastered on previous assessments. Students will record all work/answers for HW in their composition HW book.

Opportunities to Improve Grade Award quality HW completion. (via HW quiz) Test corrections in which students mayearn back 1/3 of missed test points. Only if 100% on HW. Started in class and completed (as necessary) during office hours. Feedback is provided through returned quizzes and through test corrections. Quizzes returned to students. Tests remain in classroom, but students will view them and make corrections. They will have a “Crosswalk” to take home for study purposes.

Students will need to create a “professional” gmail account Web Page Access Communication Electronic Communication allows busy people to reach each other when schedules do not mesh. Please ensure that the front office has an up-to-date email address as well as a working phone number. Methods Include: Infinite Campus Grades School-Wires Site Daily Blog/Links Email Use the cusd80 email to communicate with Mrs. Craft Phone.. irreplacable when conversation may be misunderstood. Google Drive Students will need to create a “professional” gmail account Access to files Copyright Protection Handwritten Files Remember to sign up for each teachers School-Wires e-alerts. Remember to unsubscribe from last year’s teacher’s e-alerts.

Questions or Concerns? Encourage your child/student to take advantage of tutoring options. Contact the teacher. Understand that the teacher will employ Socratic questioning frequently and not simply “give answers” to the students. Sometimes students see this as a refusal to help if they have not been exposed to this style of teaching and tutoring. However, the teacher will make sure the students have the required knowledge to complete assigned tasks.

General Supplies For Use in All Classes: 3 ring binder (shared with other subjects) Dividers for geometry (4) Notes, Warm-Ups, Quizzes, Glossary &Theorems Pencils, erasers Red Pen, Highlighters (2+ colors) Colored Pencils College Ruled Paper & Graph Paper For Geometry Only: 3 Graph Composition Books Geometry Tools (Compass, Protractor, Ruler) Roll of clear tape For Taping Papers in Composition Book

Geometry Tools Protractor Ruler Compass Smaller size is actually better Ruler Metric and Standard Units Compass AVOID flat stamped out compasses If possible, get a compass that can be tightened as needed.

Craft’s Classroom Wish List Tissues – Students will often use an entire box of tissues in a day during cold or allergy season! Hand sanitizer White board markers (black or blue) Tissues Did I mention tissues??
