A. Day One: Thursday 9th, Adelaid On arrival in Adelaide, I hired a mini- camper van for $120 a day. The price included insurance ,cooking facilities and bed linen. I also decided to buy a snake- bite kit in case I got bitten by one of Australia’s many poisonous snakes. B. Day Two: Friday 10th, Adelaid to Coorong I moved on to Hahndorf, a town where there is a strong German influence. From there, I crossed the Murray River and reached Tailem, where the road to Melbourne splits. I made for Coorong National Park, which is a paradise for millions of birds, on the fast road. C. Day Three: Saturday 11th, Robe to Penola. The next place I visited was Robe, a peaceful fishing village which is slowly being filled with holiday homes. At Robe I left the sea for Penola. My bed for the night was in a cottage. I would probably have slept in the van if I had hired one with a toilet and shower facilities, but I was glad of the company, especially with deadly snakes around. I was so tired that I slept like a log. D .Day Four: Sunday 12th, South to Port Fairy. My next stop was at the town of Mount Gambier, which sits on the side of a volcano. After a short visit, I continued down towards the coast. At port Fairy, I met my guide, Noel, in the Tower Hill nature reserve. E. Day Five: Monday 13th, The Shipwreck Coast. The name of this part of the coast comes from the large number of ships that ended their voyages on the rocky coastline. The howling winds and crashing waves smash into the rocks in winter, creating hundreds of caves and causing the coast to retreat. F. Day Six: Tuesday 14th, The Twelve Apostles The Twelve Apostles is a group of tall, thin rocks sticking out of the sea. I could see only eight from the coast but I was told you could count all ten from the air. After gazing at this wonderful view, I headed for Melbourne and the end of the road. G. Day Seven: Wednesday 15th, On to Melbourne The end of Geelong marks the end of the Great Ocean Road and the beginning of Melbourne. As I approached my destination, I saw a sign which read Shipwreck Coast. I thought to myself: “I would drive back to Adelaid if I had the time, but along the slow road and not the way I came.
