Disability is an umbrella term covering a broad spectrum of impairments conditions and can be self-defined Summarised into the following categories: Sensory Physical Cognitive Mental health Long term health conditions 12+ months Disability is… a condition that has a substantial and long-term effect on carrying out day-to-day activities

What is hate crime? A crime that is motivated by prejudice against a person because of their: Disability Ethnicity or race Sexual Orientation Gender Identity Religion or beliefs Gender Age

Hate Crime can be… Physical abuse Intimidation Humiliation Mate Crime Nasty letters, texts, e-mails or phone calls Damage to property Name calling Bad gestures Arson Graffiti Threats Bullying

How could disability hate crime make you feel? Sad Scared Alone Angry Confused Self-blame Isolated Different Loss of confidence Holistic approach may be needed

Why is disability hate crime under-reported? Being used to it Not knowing it is a hate crime Not being taken seriously Don’t want to call the Police Afraid it will get worse Knowing the person who did it Could be someone needed for support

Brendan Mason, aged 23 Two men, who Brendan believed to be his friends, lured him to a park. They hung him from a tree and filmed themselves beating him. Stripped him naked and threw body into a pond. Brendan died from 99 separate injuries. Brendan Mason's family said he was a "lovely young man" and "so happy“
