From last lesson and your homework, what do you understand about: The context of Gothic Literature? Features of Gothic Literature?

The Early Gothic 1764-1788

The late 18th century established the Gothic as a distinct genre Use the internet to research: Varney the Vampire, The Castle of Otranto, The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Monk. Who wrote these novels? When were they published? Where are they set? What plot lines do their authors employ? What types of character do they present?

Horace Walpole, The Castle of Otranto (1764) The extract (on the learning space) is taken from chapter 1 of The Castle of Otranto, a novel that has come to be seen as the originator of later Gothic texts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKl1FuWI3a4 Read and annotate the extract together. What sorts of features can you see that follow (or, indeed, initiate) the early Gothic Genre? You may want to use the questions to inform your reading.

Homework: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdgDoT8LJaM Watch and make notes on William Burn’s lecture. Create a glossary of language and features associated with The Gothic. Extension: Read Punter’s article on The Learning Space.
