BIG QUESTIONS Big Word of the Week: Cultural Diffusion Big question of the Day: How is culture affected by the interaction of people from different places and cultural groups? Big Questions of the Week: Why is culture important? How can we connect culture to our lives.

(No, you don’t need to write this down.) Introduction (No, you don’t need to write this down.) Cultures develop in two ways. One way is through spontaneous, local invention. The other is by borrowing traits from other cultures. Most cultures in the world today are a mix of other cultures. Many of the everyday items that we think of as American have in fact been borrowed from other cultures, then adapted to fit our specific cultural needs.

Review: What is culture? What are some examples of culture?

What is cultural diffusion? Cultural Diffusion is the spread of cultural ideas or practices. (write this in your “teacher’s definition” slot on your Frayer Model)

How does culture get diffused? Culture is diffused from one culture to another when people from different cultural groups interact. When we learn new languages, share recipes and foods, and move to other countries, we are diffusing, or spreading, culture.

Example of Cultural Diffusion One of the most clear examples of cultural diffusion is the way that people have adapted types of food from other cultures. What foods do you eat that were first created in another country? Where do they come from? Why is it that eating food that came from another country is an example of cultural diffusion?

How do people from different cultures interact? When people trade with foreigners, migrate to foreign lands, and explore new countries, or expand their empire, they interact with people from different cultural groups. When people interact, they often share their cultural practices and ideas, and the result is cultural diffusion! Can you think of any other times people from different cultures interact? Do you think that will lead to cultural diffusion?

How can you tell if a cultural idea or practice is an example of cultural diffusion? Checklist: Is the cultural practice or idea originally from another culture? Was the cultural practice or idea spread because people from different cultural groups interacted in some way? If the answer to both of these questions is “yes”, then the cultural practice or idea IS an example of cultural diffusion!

Is this an example of cultural diffusion? Listen to French rapper MC Solaar. While you listen, use the checklist to determine if his song is an example of cultural diffusion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n8kGW16RYs

Is this an example of cultural diffusion? Use your checklist!!!

Is this an example?

Is this an example of cultural diffusion? Mindy was tired of wearing blue shirts, so she wore green instead. Derek took a trip to Spain last summer. When he came back to the US, he started saying “Olah!” instead of “hello”. USE THE CHECKLIST!

Migration: Why do people move? Calisthenics Part II: Look at the world map and think about two places you would like to move to after graduation from high school or college. Create a list of reasons why you think you would like to move there. What would be the downside of moving?

Migration Definition: Migration: the movement of persons from one country or locality to another Put it in a sentence!

Types of Migration Internal Migration: moving to a new home within a state, country or continent. External Migration: moving to a new home in a different state. Country or continent. Emigration: leaving one country to move to another. IE: The Pilgrims emigrated from England. Population Transfer: when a government forces a large group of people out of a region usually based on ethnicity or religion This is known as an Involuntary Migration Step Migration: A series of shorter, less extreme migrations from a person to a final destination IE: moving to a farm, village, town and a city Chain Migration: a series of migrations within a family or defined group of people.
