Creating Our Professional Learning Culture Compliance to a Culture of Learning OR A Culture of Learning to Compliance

Question… How do we create a learning culture that means that our staff are not just ‘ticking the box’ to ensure they comply with regulations?

Core business - is our teaching and learning practice A Learning Culture is… Providing staff with opportunities to try something new Where staff are interested in asking why and how Staff making connections with other staff Giving our staff time to notice things and ask questions Our community ‘seeing’ our staff engaging in self learning Supports continual review and reflection HOW? Core business - is our teaching and learning practice

2016/2017 Learning Culture Initiatives SKB Professional Learning Culture Teacher to Teacher Observations Targeted Professional Learning Sessions Teacher Inquiry Student Voice Survey Formal Appraisal School wide PD focus Platform Meet Practicing Teacher Criteria

Meet Practicing Teacher Criteria 2018 Learning Culture Initiatives Master Teacher Mentor Program Meet Practicing Teacher Criteria Learning Lunches Reflective Hour

Great ideas I observed today… How can I apply these to my lessons? Teacher to Teacher Observation

Teacher to Teacher Observation: Very informal and non threating Staff make contact with another staff member each term to do a classroom observation A non contact period is used for this observation There is no follow up discussion required The purpose of the observation is for the visiting teacher to ‘see’ something that they can use in their own practice Our staff are now feeling more comfortable with having another staff member come in to do an observation Allows our staff to visit another area of the school Gives our staff an opportunity to ‘notice’ something new or different Helps our staff recognise the expertise of other staff

Targeted Professional Learning Sessions

TPL sessions: Session focus developed from a staff survey Survey asked staff three questions: 1. Area of best practice they would like a session to focus on 2. Area(s) of best practice they feel that have expertise/competence in 3. Would you be willing to run a TPL session in your area of expertise? Small TPL group – 10-15 staff, mixed staff from Junior, Middle and Senior School Some sessions have pre readings Staff are encouraged to bring along samples/examples to share with others These sessions are optional and run during the school day We now have staff stepping up to run a session

Teacher Inquiry

Current Teacher Inquiry Questions How does differentiated music projects extend the knowledge of top music students? Differentiation Can co-constructed success criteria affect the learning outcomes of boys when learning explanation writing? Success Criteria Does 10 minutes explicit teaching of full stops and capital letters enhance student learning/retention/application? Explicit Instruction

Student Voice Survey

Student Voice Survey: Implemented our first student survey in term 3, 2016 – just the Senior School and core curriculum subjects Survey focused on: Student/Teacher relationship Level of effort a student puts into a subject I enjoy my lessons and find the work interesting I feel well supported in my learning I am encouraged to challenge myself in my lessons I receive regular feedback and feed forward from my teacher My classroom environment allows me to learn Open comment… Some staff found receiving negative feedforward from students difficult Some staff needed support with how to help examine the data, to look for themes and then how to turn these themes into achievable teaching and learning goals 2017 – Student voice survey for the whole school- 1st survey at the end of term 1 Analyse data and develop T & L goals 2nd survey at the end of term 3

Formal Appraisal Regular meetings to review/reflect & support goals Goal setting with Appraiser Regular meetings to review/reflect & support goals Formal Appraisal & follow up discussion Formal Appraisal

Platform for recording – Onenote

Challenges to Creating a Learning Culture Dr Brene Brown – ‘The Gifts of Imperfection’ We have more access to information, more books and more good science – Why are we struggling like never before? Because we don’t talk about the things that get in the way of doing what we know is best.

Some of Our Challenges Time Negative Staff Professional learning built into school day Reflective Hour – non contact time* Set up Onenote system Negative Staff Optional Professional Learning Staff sharing opportunities Learning lunches* Go slow(ish) 20% on board Recognising Expertise Staff survey of expertise TPL sessions – staff led Regular informal staff observations Mentor Teacher Program* * 2018 initiatives
