The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: CDC Prompts Prompt 1: Twain created a natural leader in the character of Tom Sawyer. Tom is often chosen by his friends to be the captain, chief, or general, and he is often followed by other boys. What two qualities/traits do you think Tom possesses to make others think he is a leader? (C-D-C-D-C) Prompt 2: There are stereotypes in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that Twain uses to discuss gender roles (think Disney clip from earlier). Tom’s role is used to discuss what it means to be a “good boy.” Using data from the novel, describe two characteristics that Twain emphasizes as positive traits for young men during this time period. (C-D-C-D-C) Prompt 3: Revisit your thinking on Twain’s use of stereotypes and gender roles. How does Twain use the character of Becky Thatcher to demonstrate the “good girl” stereotype? Using data from the novel, describe two characteristics that Twain emphasizes as positive traits for young men during this time period. (C-D- C-D-C) Remember to include… Your citation for each piece of data (Twain 22) An introduction for each quote (examples: Twain writes, according to, in the novel, for example, etc.)
