Mark Twain is the pseudonym of one of Amerika’s greatest authors and humorists, Samuel Langhorne Clemens.

He was born on November 30, 1835. When he was 4, his family moved to the Mississippi River town of Hannibal. Every boy in Hannibal dreamed of becoming a pilot on a river steamboat. After his father’s death, a twelve-year- old Sam had to leave school and work as an apprentice to a printer in Hannibal. Setting type for newspaper articles and stories made him interested in reading, and reading led him eventually to writing.

He also prospected for gold in Nevada, with no luck, and for several exciting years he was a Mississippi riverboat pilot. When he later became a reporter in the Fast West, he chose for a pen name Mark Twain. The words “mark twain” are a river- boating term meaning “two fathoms” (about four meters). Water two fathoms deep was safe for the riverboats.

One of America’s most famous literary characters is a boy named Tom Sawyer.

“The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” are the boy adventures of Mark Twain, although the story is imaginary. Between two covers of the book he put his memories of the caves, his friends, his sister, his brother Henry, the village of Hannibal, and the great wide – spreading river. And his mother is there, too, for she is the Aunt Polly.

“The more things are forbidden, the more popular they become”. Mark Twain was a great humorist. Everybody knows his quotable phrases. “The more things are forbidden, the more popular they become”. “Life would be happier if we could only be born at the age of eighty and gradually approach eighteen”.

The writer was fond of collecting things which nobody had.
