By: Christine Heishman My Literacy Narrative By: Christine Heishman

In the beginning… When I was a little girl, my parents introduced me to the best cat around, The Cat in the Hat. Soon after I read this book, I decided to tackle the rest of the books by Dr. Seuss, and man, were there a lot of them!

Dr. Seuss introduced me to the world of reading that I loved then and still do to this day. I feel that Dr. Seuss helped me realize as a child, that when you read a book that teaches you something, such as rhyming, the story isn’t always going to be boring!

Reading and Writing… I did however, in the beginning, have problems with reading. I always thought it was because my parents never really took a lot of time to help me read before I went to school and when I was in grade school, I always felt like I had to rely on my teachers to help me. But, as soon as I had the right teacher to help me, nothing would stop me. After homework was done every night, you would still see me with a book in my hand. Writing wasn’t as difficult for me once I learned how to read and spell. I was more into reading a story than actually writing one of my own.

Towards the middle… In these books it seemed that Junie B. Jones would always get herself in trouble for doing something she thought was cool. I think I liked these books because I used to be like her when I was little. When I got into grade school, the library introduced me to another set of books that I grew to love, Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park.

Recent past… When I got into high school, even though it had been released before then, I got introduced to the amazing world of…Harry Potter! Harry Potter is to this day, still my favorite book series I have ever read…and I’ve read the Twilight Saga!  The way J.K Rowling set up the books to have their own plot for each book individually and then have the major plot to connect all of the books together really kept me reading.

Harry Potter was a wizard who’s parents were killed by an evil wizard named Lord Voldemort. When Voldemort tried to kill Harry, the spell counter struck and put a lightening bolt scar on Harry’s forehead. But as you read the books, that is not the only thing that Lord Voldemort gave to Harry on that horrible night. Harry is then raised by his aunt and uncle until the grounds keeper of Hogwarts, Hagrid comes and tells Harry that he is a wizard, and takes him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. On the train they take to the school, Harry then meets his friends for life, Ronald Weasley and Harmionie Granger. Throughout the entire book series, they stick together to try and defeat Lord Voldemort.

The Present… Even though college is keeping me busy with homework, I still am able to find time to read for fun. The book series that I am currently reading is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larson. The other books in the series are called The Girl who Played with Fire and The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. I never thought that I would be into any crime fiction novels, because everything that I have read had to do with magic, fantasy and vampires. But, I feel that this book series was definitely a good change for me, and I can’t wait to get started on the rest of the series.

All of these books have helped shape my life and I hope to one day, introduce my kids to these books so they can love reading and literacy as much as I do!
