Pulleys and Inclined Planes Notes

Simple Machine – a device with few or no moving parts; they make work easier by changing the amount or direction of force

Inclined plane sloping surface like a ramp or wedge Used to raise heavy or large objects Decrease the amount of force needed to move something Force must be applied over a greater distance  The longer the inclined plane, the less force you have to use.

Pulley Consists of one or more wheels and a rope A rope is looped around a wheel, and an object (load) is attached to the rope Pulling on the free end of the rope lifts the load. Pulley systems can decrease the amount of force needed to lift a load. They can change the direction of the force applied to a load The more wheels, the less force is needed to lift load
