Student Success Center Visioning Workshop Capital Asset Strategies Thursday, April 20, 2017

UCR Instructional Space: Integrated Strategy The campus has an integrated strategy to improve instructional spaces Projects include renovations to classrooms and class labs The North District development is planned to include Living Learning space and flexible spaces that can be used for instruction The Student Success Center would be a new facility, planned to provide classrooms and student support space Project Projected Opening Classroom & Class Lab Renovations Phased over next 4-5 yrs; beginning Summer 2017 Pierce Hall Improvements Fall 2019 North District Phase 1 Fall 2020 Student Success Center Fall 2021

State Funding Opportunity One-time State (AB94) funding is available system-wide for capital projects Campuses submit a defined program, budget, and schedule to pursue project funds Project proposals are due to UC Office of the President during Spring 2017 UCR has prioritized the Student Success Center to propose for these funds Success = Funding July 2018 Graphic by Creative Stall – thenounproject.com

Pedagogical Trends

Active Learning Pedagogical Trends Course-related work that students perform collaboratively: not simply watching, listening, and taking notes. 70 person active classroom at Ellis Hall 333, Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada

Flipped Classrooms Pedagogical Trends Short video lectures are viewed by students at home before the class session, while in-class time is devoted to exercises, projects, or discussions. McGill University in Canada redesigned its lecture hall to include ‘pods’ for group work, deemphasizing the lecture

Designing for Pedagogy Adaptable Sizing Space utilized for large auditoriums may have better uses divided into smaller gathering areas that host the students of a few classrooms at once. Maintaining smaller size  preserves collaborative and group possibilities. Stanford’s LKSC Studio Classrooms hold between 60 and 120 students using one or both classrooms

Designing for Pedagogy Collaborative classroom furniture. Collaboration means interaction between students and instructors and among students, as well. Problem-solving and group projects require learning furniture  that adjusts to multiple learners, then quickly reconfigures to individual mode for activities like testing and independent reading. Examples of adjustable desks in various shapes and sizes

Designing for Pedagogy Intelligent Lecterns The lectern can incorporate features such as a recessed flat-screen monitor, USB ports, interactive whiteboard controls and audio/visual capabilities. Examples of modern compact lecterns

Designing for Pedagogy Flexible lighting levels Lighting levels should adjust to a wide range of learning activities. It must be easily dimmed or enhanced according to the needs of the moment. Electronic displays must be viewable and students should be able to read projection screens and whiteboards whether they are closest or furthest away from the presentation, and adjust for outside lighting changes throughout the day or year.
