Lesson 2 The Bible Is God’s Word

Aim: Why is it important for us to know that the Bible is verbally inspired?

What do we mean when we say that God gave us the Bible by “verbal inspiration”? 1 Thessalonians 2:13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. God’s Word

What do we mean when we say that God gave us the Bible by “verbal inspiration”? 2 Peter 1:21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. because the Holy Spirit guided the men men

What do we mean when we say that God gave us the Bible by “verbal inspiration”? 1 Corinthians 2:12-13 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. because the Holy Spirit guided the men to the write words ( ) Verbal Inspiration

Key Point #1 Verbal inspiration means that the Holy Spirit guided men to write the exact words that he wanted them to write.

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. What is one reason why it’s important for us to know that the Bible is verbally inspired? John 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. John 10:35 If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside— So I know No errors

What is one reason why it’s important for us to know that the Bible is verbally inspired? Numbers 23:19 God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? So I know No errors No unkept promises

Key Point #2 Because the Bible is verbally inspired, we can be sure that it has no errors and that all its promises will be kept.

What is a second reason why it’s important for us to know that the Bible is verbally inspired? Deuteronomy 4:2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you. So I know

What is a second reason why it’s important for us to know that the Bible is verbally inspired? I know Revelation 22:18-19 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll. add subtract

What is a second reason why it’s important for us to know that the Bible is verbally inspired? Jude 4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. So I know add subtract

What is a second reason why it’s important for us to know that the Bible is verbally inspired? 2 Peter 3:16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. So I know add subtract change the meaning

Key Point #3 Because the Bible is verbally inspired, we will not want to add to it, subtract from it, or change its meaning in any way.

I believe that the Bible is God’s Word because it makes so much sense. Evaluate… I believe that the Bible is God’s Word because it makes so much sense.

Discuss… What are some of the ways the devil gets people to change the Bible? Why does the devil do this?

Lesson 2 The Bible Is God’s Word It is important for me to know that the Bible is verbally inspired because then I will trust what it says and never change it in any way.

Vocabulary… “Inspire” To “breathe in”
