Our focus this morning: James 2:5, Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? Working Translation: Listen (pay attention), my fellow bels, God has chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom, which He promised to those loving Him, has He not? (hasn’t He?) (Yes, He has!) Our focus this morning: What does James mean by “heirs of the kingdom.”
The Doctrine of Heirship (Inheritance) 1. Heir – “one who receives something as a possession, a beneficiary.” 2. The LJC is the Heir of all things (Heb 1:2; Ps 2:8-9; Dan 7:13-14). 3. Bels are heirs based on redemption (Col 1:12-13; Eph 1:7, 11). 4. The indwelling of GHS is a down-payment and guarantee of the bels inheritance (Eph 1:13-14; 2 Cor 1:21; 5:5). 5. Our inheritance is secure forever (1 Pet 1:3-5). 6. The faithful bel will rec/pos the inheritance (Heb 6:12; 1 Pet 3:9). 7. A bel can lose inheritance (1 Cor 6:9-10; Gal 5:19-21; Eph 5:5).
1 Peter 3:9, Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling (insult), but on the contrary blessing (speaking well), knowing that you were called (responded to the gospel call) to this (for this purpose), that you may inherit a blessing (rewards in eternity).
(Revised to show contextual relationship 1 Corinthians 6:7-9 (Revised to show contextual relationship 7. Now therefore it is already an utter failure for y’all that y’all go to law (have judgments) against one another. Why do y’all (bels) not rather “be wronged” (ἀδικέω)? Why do y’all (bels) not rather be cheated? 8. No, y’all yourselves (bels) are “doing wrong” (ἀδικέω) and cheating, and you do these things to your brethren (bels). 9. Do y’all (bels) not know that “wrong doers” (ἄδικος) will not inherit the kingdom of God?
(Revised to show direct relationship between verses) 1 Corinthians 6:7-9 (Revised to show direct relationship between verses) Now therefore it is already an utter failure for y’all that y’all go to law (have judgments) against one another (bels). Why do y’all not rather “be wronged” (ἀδικέω)? Why do y’all not rather be cheated? No, y’all yourselves are “doing wrong” (ἀδικέω) and cheating, and you do these things to your brethren (bels vs bels). Do y’all not know that “wrong doers” (ἄδικος) will not inherit the kingdom of God?
(Displayed to show thematic relationship of the words “wrong doing”) 1 Corinthians 6:7-9 (Displayed to show thematic relationship of the words “wrong doing”) vv. 7-9 Why not rather “be wronged” (ἀδικέω)? … y’all yourselves are “doing wrong” (ἀδικέω) …“wrong doers” (ἄδικος) will not inherit the kingdom of God … Paul is writing to Corinthian bels to correct their conduct. In the context Paul will identify the conduct that these bels need to correct. Read vv. 9-10 for a list of that conduct.
1 Corinthians 6:11 “And such were some of you (plural)….” “And these things (sins) some of y’all were” (“Some of y’all once lived this way.”) Two groups of people: 1. “Some” – a smaller number 2. “Y’all” – a larger number
You all Some The “some” of 1 Cor 6:11
Two Ways to Interpret This Phrase 1. The “some” is a smaller group of believers in a larger group of unbelievers. 2. The “some” as a smaller group of believers in a larger group of believers.
You all (Unbelievers) Some (Believers) The “some” of 1 Cor 6:11
You all (Believers) Some (Believers) The “some” of 1 Cor 6:11
1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you all, but you all were washed, but you all were sanctified, but you all were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. Paul is writing to believers, … ALL of them are believers. The “y’alls” make sense and the strong adversative conjunctions “but” make sense if the “y’alls” are believers in the Corinthian congregation.
The Doctrine of Heirship (Inheritance) 8. The bel in the LJC is an heir of God and has the potential of being a joint-heir with Christ (Rom 8:16-17). (men – de construction = OT1H, OTOH) 9. The bel who is a joint-heir with Christ will co-rule with Him (2 Tim 2:12; Rev 2:26-27; 3:21). 10. Conclusion:
Arnold Fruchtenbaum comments on James 2:5. He said, “All bels will enter the Messianic Kingdom but only those who live an obedient spiritual lifestyle will inherit the Kingdom. This means that only such believers will be rewarded, honored, and given crowns of authority to co-rule in the Messianic Kingdom with Messiah, the King.”
