Welcome West Springfield Crew 2015 – 2016 Season General Membership Meeting February 17, 2015 Regular Season Preview

Key Dates 20 Feb – Launching of the launches 22 Feb – First day on water 6 Mar – Basket Bingo 12 Mar – Picture Day and Boat Christening (at river) 21-25 Mar – Spring Break – PRACTICE DAILY 26 Mar – First race - Polar Bear Regatta (upper boats) 1 Apr – Team Pasta Load 2 Apr – Regional Park Regatta (all boats) 9 Apr – Walter Mess Regatta 16 Apr – Darrell Winslow Regatta 30 Apr – Al Urquia Regatta 7 May – Ted Phoenix Regatta 14 - 15 May – VA Scholastic Rowing Championships 19 - 21 May – Stotesbury Cup Regatta (Philadelphia) * Dates for all crew events are on the website calendar

Volunteers Our club runs on volunteers Over 150 volunteers required to run any given regatta Be polite – everybody is doing their best Questions/concerns – find a Board member State rowing association (VASRA) – 1 ½ positions for WSHS Occoquan Local Organizing Committee (OLOC) positions Parking Coordinator (can be 2) – WSHS Football runs parking Weigh-in Coordinator (split with another school) See Martha Operations Volunteers – launches, ergs, etc. Board positions Admin, Ops, Secretary all turn over this year Novice Liaison, VASRA Rep, Spirit Wear, Away Coordinator

On the Water Monday – Saturday, until regattas start Monday – Friday, after regattas start Regattas every Saturday beginning March 26th Practice times: 4:30 to 6:30 (time adjustment subject to sunset/daylight savings time starting 14 March) MUST EXIT Sandy Run Park BY DARK. Sunset on first day of on the water practice will be at 5:53 PM All practices and regattas at Sandy Run We WILL have practice the week of Spring Break Schedule TBD Exception Stotesbury Nationals

On the Water Cold, cold, cold – dress warm with layers (“Under Armor” ideal) but nothing that will get caught in slide Lots of land training for several weeks Orientation Inexperienced rowers Behavior at boathouse No profanity Respect others’ property SAFETY FIRST! Crowded Practice extra safety in wet terrain Communication paramount – Captains and Coaches *Check website under the links “On the Water Practices” and “Especially for Novices” for detailed information on practice guidelines

Sandy Run Regional Park Check Crew website for detailed directions Sandy Run is a rowing only facility Park Manager – Matthew White Park Ranger – Danielle LaFever SPEED LIMIT STRICTLY ENFORCED BY RADAR 15 MILES PER HOUR Teenage drivers beware – will be asked to leave the park for unsafe driving Unsafe drivers will be/have been reported to Fairfax County Police by residents. http://www.nvrpa.org/park/sandy_run/
