Nickel and Dimed: Jigsaw/research

Step 1: Open your Nickel and Dimed books to the INTRODUCTION Today we are going to popcorn read this section of the book (follow along and be prepared if you get selected to read) As we read- you are expected to record the following on a sheet of lined paper (this is your ticket out of class): Types of Reading Responses Directions Text to Self (What connections can you make with the Introduction and your life/past/experiences?) You must record at least 2 Text to Self Connections prior to leaving class Text to World (What connections can you make with the Introduction and the world/news/current events that you are aware of?) You must record at least 2 Text to World Connections prior to leaving class

Step 2 Form groups of 3 Your group will be assigned a portion of Nickel and Dimed to read You will make a plan for reading, read/take notes, and eventually become the EXPERTS on your assigned reading EVERYONE WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR READING (eventually your group will separate, and each of you will independently need to summarize your section of the book to others in the class) Reading Assignments Page Numbers Chapter 1 “Serving in Florida” + The Evaluation Pg. 11- 49 & pg. 193-221 Chapter 2 Pg. 51-119 Chapter 3 Pg. 121-191

Step 3 Every group member must contribute You must use COLOR Now that you have completed your assigned reading- it is time to restructure our groups! Summarize your section of the book with your NEW group After each group member summarizes their part of the book- you must create a VISUAL summary of the book Visual Summary Directions Rules Using MAINLY drawn images/symbols and a select few IMPORTANT WORDS/PRHASES- summarize the most important details from each of the following sections of reading: -Chapter 1 (do not summarize the evaluation) -Chapter 2 -Chapter 3 Every group member must contribute You must use COLOR Work must be neat (ready for a presentation using the doc camera) Work must accurately summarize the book AND show detail Each chapter must have ONE significant quote that represents the main idea of the chapter (please provide a parenthetical citation for the quote you choose)

Step 4 In your new groups of 3- you will: Select a research topic (a problem/issue/topic that was addressed in Nickel and Dimed) EXAMPLE: The threat of homelessness for minimum wage earners 2. Formulate a research question inspired by your topic (you will conduct research to get a more current perspective on your topic as Nickel and Dimed was written in 2001) EXAMPLE: What type of housing is affordable for current minimum wage earners? How many minimum wage earners are homeless?

The final product conduct research create an annotated bibliography Your group will: conduct research create an annotated bibliography create a poster that presents the results of your research to the class

Step 5 Get your research question approved You must follow the requirements below to guide you through your research: Get your research question approved Use the approved databases ONLY for your research Find reliable and current sources from the databases (publication must be between 2006-2016) Each group member must find 2 sources Each group member must come to class Friday with their 2 sources PRINTED for class use (points tied to this- I will not print for you)

Step 6 All group members will present their source to their group After each group member presents- you must fill out a CRAAP test worksheet to evaluate the source Repeat this process until all sources have been analyzed by the CRAAP test

Step 7 In order to organize all of your new knowledge- your group will be putting together an Annotated Bibliography (add examples) Since we are working in groups- all group members will be held accountable for THEIR OWN Annotated Bibliography (we will staple together eventually) LET’S LOOK AT THE GUIDELINES HANDOUT FOR DETAILS!

Step 8- A Visual Comparison Create a POSTER to represent your research/new understandings Leave BLANK SPACE along the margins of your poster Your Research Question Goes Here BLANK B L A N K Current Information (2006-2016 Sources) -Visuals -Bulleted Information - A minimum of 6 relevant quotes from your sources (2 from each person’s source) all go on the RIGHT side of the poster Nickel and Dimed 2001 Information -Visuals -Bulleted Information - A minimum of 3 related quotes from the book all go on the LEFT side of your poster This BLANK SPACE is reserved for feedback/reactions from your peers

Visual Comparison Rules All work must be neat and easy to follow/read All quotes must be properly cited with parenthetical citations You MUST use color The content on the poster must be INFORMATIVE and ACCURATE You must include both IMAGES and WORDS throughout your poster ALL GROUP MEMBERS MUST CONTRIBUTE TO THE CREATION OF YOUR POSTER

Gallery Walk PREP Attach Annotated Bibs Staple all Annotated Bibliographies to the back of the poster on the UPPER LEFT CORNER The name of the person who made each Annotated Bib must be present in MLA format on the Annotated Bib itself NAMES ALL NAMES of group members must be written on the BACK of the poster in the UPPER RIGTHT corner RED PENS Once you have prepared your poster for presentation- all group members must grab a RED INK PEN to provide reactions/feedback/connections made during the gallery walk today

Gallery Walk Hang posters on walls or lay on desks (find a home base for your poster that will allow for observers to easily write in the margins) Rules: Travel poster to poster WITH your research group When the music is playing- you are reading through the poster you are stationed at When the music is playing- you are responding WITH SUBSTANCE to the research being presented (in the margins- with your red pens). YOU MUST SIGN YOUR NAME BESIDE YOUR COMMENTS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR TODAY Example feedback: Personal connections with topic/research/findings Questions about topic/research/findings Connections with the research and other current events 4. When the music STOPS PLAYING- you must finish your comments and rotate to a new poster
