ENERGY SECTION 2.2

ENERGY 2.2 ENERGY CAN BE DEFINED AS THE ABILITY TO DO WORK OR TO CAUSE A CHANGE. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF ENERGY: KINETIC ENERGY POTENTIAL ENERGY

KINETIC ENERGY KINETIC ENERGY IS THE ENERGY OF MOTION, SUCH AS FALLING, HEAT, LIGHT, AND ELECTRICITY.

Potential energy POTENTIAL ENERGY- ENERGY THAT IS STORED. ENERGY THAT IS NOT IN MOTION.

Kinetic and potential energy Potential energy can be converted into Kinetic energy. Example: Pushing a rocking chair, lighting a fire, or starting a battery will change the energy from POTENTIAL to KINETIC energy. Kinetic energy can be converted to Potential energy. Example: Once the rocking chair stops moving the energy is converted from KINETIC to POTENTIAL.

THERMODYNAMICS The law of thermodynamics are statements of how energy cannot occur. There are TWO laws of thermodynamics. The first law of thermodynamics states that in any process, energy is neither created nor destroyed. The second law of thermodynamics states that whenever energy is used, some of it can not be used again.

**IMPORTANT NOTE** IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT ENERGY CAN NOT BE CREATED NOR DESTROYED. ENERGY CAN ONLY BE TRANSFERRED FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER.

ENTROPY THE INCREASE IN RANDOMNESS AND LOSS OF USUABLE ENERGY IS TERMED ENTROPY.
