Acupuncture By Mayah Stokes

Origin- China C. 6000 BCE Used sharp bones and stones instead of needles Was declined in the 17th century because people thought of it as irrational. In 1949 it was reintroduced in china, and then went to other countries.

Purpose- Said to promote a natural self healing process. Studies have shown that acupuncture has helped: Strokes Asthma Addictions Muscle and joint pain Anxiety and depression Fibromyalgia Migraines PTSD High blood pressure Infertility

Method- 1- ask about health history 2-examine tongue, find pulse, and any other examinations based on your needs 3- acupuncturist then looks over everything and finds what they are going to do 4- they put needles in places called anatomic sites (aka acupoints) 5- after 5-30 minutes they take the needles out and people have said to be very relaxed after Depending on the person, some people only need to go once to feel results, while others it might take weeks

Does it actually work? Ka-Kit Hui, founder and director of the UCLA Center for East-West Medicine, states, “There's nothing magical about acupuncture. Many of these [alternative] techniques, including acupuncture, they all work by activating the body's own self- healing.” "One major hypothesis is that acupuncture works through neurohormonal pathways. Basically, you put the needle through specific points in the body and stimulate the nerve. The nerve actually sends signals to the brain, and the brain releases neural hormones such as beta-Endorphins. By doing that, the patient may feel euphoric, or happy, and this increases the pain threshold and they feel less pain," says Dr. Ting Bao, an integrative medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
