Year 10 Assessment Parent Meeting Tuesday 14 February 2017

Record of School Achievement (RoSA) Is compulsory for every Year 10 student in NSW Continues throughout Terms 1, 2, 3 & 4 Involves study of 7 compulsory subjects and 2 electives Compulsory: English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, PDHPE & Sport Necessitates students meeting requirements mandated by NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

RoSA Requirements Following the course developed by NESA Applying diligence and sustained effort Achieving some or all course outcomes Completing assessment tasks.

N Determinations If a student is not meeting course requirements, an N Determination Warning Letter will be issued. Three N Determination Warning Letters in any one subject without sufficient improvement will lead to an N Determination being applied in that subject. If a student received a final N Determination in a compulsory subject, they will not be considered to have met that subject’s requirements. This means that will not have completed the Year 10 RoSA and will be unable to proceed to Year 11, or go to TAFE or work unless they are 17 years of age.

Assessment Tasks Each course has approximately 3 to 5 assessment tasks In most cases, one of these tasks will be a Yearly Examination held in Week 6 of Term 4 Assessment tasks are important assessment tools which measure student progress in relation to syllabus outcomes. Assessment tasks can include tests, exams, practicals / field-trips and take-home tasks.

Schedule of Assessment Tasks The week of each scheduled task is included in the school’s Assessment Policy The specific date of each task is contained on an additional task sheet which will be issued to students by their class teacher a minimum of 2 weeks before a task is due Assessment task due dates should be recorded onto a large calendar which can be easily accessed by the student and her family.

Assessment Task Dates Assessment tasks must be submitted or undertaken in the specified period on the specified day for the task to be accepted. If a students does not submit / undertake an assessment task in the specified period on the specified day, they will receive a zero for the task, and an N Determination Warning issued - unless they successfully apply for Illness / Misadventure.

Illness / Misadventure Students may apply for Illness / Misadventure if they have been prevented by illness or circumstances beyond their control from: a) submitting an assessment task on time b) completing the task to a standard commensurate to their ability.

Examples of what Illness / Misadventure is Being too sick to attend school, e.g. vomiting Attendance at court Family bereavement Emergency involving the police or some other government agency Homelessness.

Examples of what Illness / Misadventure is NOT Family celebrations / holidays Taking a relative to the airport Misreading the due date Not understanding what to do Misinterpreting the question Losing the usb with the task and having no back-up copy Leaving the task on the bus - without having a back-up copy.

To apply for Illness / Misadventure Contact the subject Head Teacher on the morning of the task (by telephone or email) and let them know you are going to miss the task or that your performance will likely be hindered if attempting the task Request an Illness / Misadventure form on the morning of your first day back at school Complete the Illness / Misadventure form that night and have your parents sign it.

Complete the Student Medical / Misadventure Certificate Attach any additional supporting documentation (e.g. court notice, letter from counsellor or police officer) Give the Illness / Misadventure Form, Student Medical / Misadventure Certificate and any supporting documentation to the Head Teacher ASAP.

Ilness / Misadventure Outcome Head Teachers forward the Illness / Misadventure application to the Deputy Principal The Deputy Principal makes a decision on the Illness / Misadventure application and informs the family of the outcome in writing.

A successful Illness / Misadventure The student will still be able to have the task counted to their final assessment mark. Depending on the circumstances, the students may submit the same task, do an alternate task or have their grade based the remaining tasks converted to a mark out of 100. The student DOES NOT receive an N Determination Warning for the task.

An unsuccessful Illness / Misadventure Leads to a student receiving 0 for the task Results in an N Determination Warning Letter being issued Requires the student to still complete the assessment task for 0 marks in order to eliminate the N Determination Warning.

To ensure a successful RoSA Attend at least 85% of lessons Complete all set classwork, homework and assessments Undertake a minimum of 1.5 hours school related work each evening & weekend Communicate with your parents, teachers, Year Adviser & School Executive Be healthy – sleep, eat, exercise, laugh!.

Surround yourself with positive influences Be organised Seek help when it is needed Never let an issue escalate Have goals to work towards Understand that the successful completion of Year 10 is premised on an effective partnership between the student, the school and her family.
