Mixing to create a color wheel Project #3 Mixing to create a color wheel

Before we begin painting; here are a few points to remember You are responsible for mixing your own paint and painting on your own color wheel (do not share created colors with anyone).

Reminders continued… You will be given a more than adequate amount of Red, Yellow and Blue paint. These are the Primary Colors and will be mixed to create all other colors. Make sure when mixing your Secondary colors that you make PLENTY. This will be used later when creating the Tertiary colors as well. You DO NOT want to run out.

More reminders… When getting paint off of the main color plate (Red, Yellow, or Blue) be careful not to mix ANY other color into them. EX: When getting red paint off of the plate; use a brush that has only touched PURE red and no other color. If this means that you have to dirty another brush, then do that – there are plenty of brushes to use.

Still more reminders…. Your sections of your color wheel need to be painted neatly and completely. Use an adequate amount of paint so that you can use neat strokes. Avoid painting with too little paint – it takes on a chicken scratch look that is not attractive.

Getting Started Paint all Primary colors first The Primary colors are labeled with a “P” on your color wheel sheet

Next… Mix two Primary colors to create a Secondary color. (Hint: if you mix the darker color into the lighter color it will take less paint that the reverse). Mix the colors on your plate until you get the desired color before painting on the color wheel. The Secondary sections are labeled with a “S” Make note of their location the “S” that you are painting over should be between the two colors you just mixed. Remember you will be using this secondary color again in the next level of color so mix extra!

Then…. Mix one primary color with the secondary color to one side of it. This will create a tertiary color. Use this color to paint the section marked “T” between the two colors

Finally… Identify each color by name: Write the name along the outer rim of the wheel The color names are: Red Yellow Blue Orange Green Violet Red Violet Blue Violet Red Orange Yellow Orange Blue Green Yellow Green

Clean up, clean up, everybody clean up… Pour your cup of dirty water into the bucket with dirty water COMPLETELY dry the cup out before placing it back in the box Rinse ALL of the brushes used COMPLETELY dry the brushes before placing them back in the container Spray your table area with cleaning spray Wipe down with a paper towel until the surface is clean

Where do I put my completed project to dry? The teacher will designate an area for you to place your paper to dry. Make sure you put YOUR name AND block at the top. There will be 125 others that will look just like yours. The NO NAME projects will be discarded and students without a project will be expected to re-do theirs on their own time!
